Do HP printers self-destruct if you install generic toner cartridges?

My printer is out of warranty.  I confess I tried using generic toner to save some money and it worked okay for a while, but now I get "79 Service Error" and it goes into a loop of powering up and down whenever I connect my printer to WiFi... Any chance this could be HP's revenge for not buying their toner cartridges?

Yep.  HP has a built-in "original HP" accessories detector.  And when you don't use HP toner, HP ink, and HP paper your printer will balk.  I switched to Epson long ago from HP because of BS like that.  Try the Epson XP-830, you'll like it.
