England became the dominant colonial power by planting actual colonies and sending 200,000 yeoman middle farmers and middle class English people to live their permanently.
Extra credit...you need a middle class to make a democracy.
France and Spain unlike England never sent their 'people' to America (except France Quebec) just some adventurers, exploiters, soldiers, traders and none of their middle class (except French Quebec).

In short, they were the dominant Naval Power at that time.
Naval power rose and waned for various nations, with SPAIN once being the strongest, or perhaps the French had a decent run....but in the end, Britain ruled the seas, until the world wars came along, and then Germany had a lot to say about NAVAL prowness. All the while America, developed it's own powerful navy, and then England's power waned and now America has an unmatched naval worldwide reach.

That's NOT a 'quick' question.
It warrants a lot of reading, research and thought.
And exactly HOW are we supposed to get 'extra credit'?
I suggest you start reading some history books and do your own homework.
