Why does his dog sit on my lap?

I can tell that my friend is a bit uncomfortable with the fact that his dog just snuggles up to me. I have never met his dog before and at first his dog kept barking at me, and we did some errands and when I sat on the couch with his dog, she comes up to me and hands her paws to me and then just climbs on my lap. He tried to get her off me by calling her to the other side of the couch, but she didn’t want to get off my lap so he came over to pick her off my lap. Idk if it’s because I looked uncomfortable or he just doesn’t want his dog getting too close. Do dogs actually sense good/bad or energy in people?

Update:

I wasn’t sitting in her spot, she had a specific pillow for her spot and I just sat on the edge of the couch and she just came over and climbed on top and let me pet her, which I know is a bit inviting, but also, it’s because this happens quite a lot of dogs that I meet that are usually scared/or often do not like people, so I’m just wondering about the energy thing

Both female and male dogs sometimes sit on their pet parent just for fun. The sitting might be accompanied with some rolling around in your lap and even playful noises. This may be an opportunity for a little light wrestling and tumbling with your pet, possibly followed by your dog kissing you to death.

Yes, dogs are very good at judging character in a human being.  I trust a dogs judgement or assessment of an individual.  Their gut feelings are true to the bone.

The dog was attention seeking from someone it considered an easy touch and it was right it seems.

Dogs WILL take advantage of a human that they think is below them in the hierarchy stakes .

Obviously by observing your body language and general attitude, dogs KNOW they can twist you round their little finger(paw) to their own advantage, and be the dominant one in the situation.

Its nothing to do with any affections that you may think they are showing you.

The only `energy` you are conveying to the dog, by petting it, and showing it the attention it demanded, is that you are weak and submissive to the dogs advances for attention.

IN the dog world if another dog dared put a paw on a more dominant natured dog, it would be ignored or even get get a good telling off, depending on the situation.

Whereas if a dog put its paw on a more submissive dog, it will accept it, and comply with what the other dog wants to do eg: play or just be bossy.

" hands her paws to me and then just climbs on my lap"...."climbed on top and let me pet her" so the dog is making the decisions, you are being told by the dog you are its possession........ some would call it  the dog was"dominating"you but whatever you wish to call it, it was telling you that you are lower in the 'pack order' than it is...trouble is that humans who don't understand dog behaviour see it as a 'dog loving them' or 'wanting to be with them' or 'likes them' and so comply and praise the dag for what is really bad manners/behaviour

I do not think the dog having (or not having) the ABILITY to sense good or bad energy, has anything to do with this situation.  You may have simply dropped onto the dog's NORMAL spot on the couch, or the dog was "DOMINATING YOU" first by pawing you.... then by sitting on top of you.

IMO, he SHOULD (indeed) have removed his RUDE (and uninvited) dog from your lap and person.

My dogs know good/bad energy.  I have no idea what your friend's dog knows or doesn't know.
