What would happen if a resistor is removed from the circuit?

The LED will not light if either resistor is removed.
The 150 ohm R is a current limit for the LED (limits current to around 20mA which is way too bright for high efficiency LEDs).
The 500 ohm R serves to limit the current limit flowing in to the base.
