As horrific as that was, it was done because the Japanese would never have given up.  Its estimated that dropping the bombs saved 2 million lives by ending the war.  They could have surrendered after the first bomb but would not.  The Emperor wanted to remain in power.  No way.  Only a few people even knew that bomb existed.  They were made in secret.  Even Truman as VP was unaware of them until FDR died and he became president.  

The 80s was the best. Not perfect but much better then anything since.
