How do avoid bringing bed bugs into your home?

My dad is staying at a hotel currently for work. He discovered a bed bug just now and we are worried he will bring them into the house. We told him to strip down in the garage that we would throw his clothes and shoes immediately into the washer. What further steps should we take? How do we get HIM inside?

He should take all his clothes off immediately and put them in the laundry (run it immediately). Anything he packed in his bag should also be washed, but most importantly dried on high. Shoes should be put in the dryer for a short time. Bed bugs can hide in fabric and soft things. They can’t hide on his body. So as long as he doesn’t bring his things inside without putting them in the dryer, it’s fine.

Tell the hotel manager before you forget--that you found bedbugs in the room.

Make sure you don't bring ANYTHING into your home that has been in that room--including your dad's clothing and SHOES, paperwork, the suitcase he used, and anything ELSE--coat, gloves, hat, etc.

Wash it all in HOT water. Dry it on HIGH heat. Then repeat. (Yes--wash twice, dry twice.) Anything that can't be washed can be placed in a black plastic garbage bag, sprayed with bedbug spray, and then securely closed--with tape or rubber bands. Leave these in the sun, or the garage for at least a week. That includes the suitcase.

He can be washed down with disinfecting wipes, then he should take a hot shower. Make sure he washes his hair.

Bedbugs are hitchhikers--they can hide in extremely small crevices. Check his room and bed thoroughly for at least two weeks after he returns, to make sure he didn't miss any--and if he did, CALL A PRO immediately to have the room and everything in it sprayed. Your local pro will have small 'portable' insecticide packets you can use for bedding, shoes, books, or personal items. Ask them.

It usually only takes one treatment if you need a professional. And it's totally worth it. So don't miss anything if you can help it.

Protecting Your Home from Bed Bugs

Check secondhand furniture, beds and couches for any signs of bed bug infestation before bringing them home.

Use a protective cover that encases mattresses and box springs to eliminate many hiding spots. ...

Reduce clutter in your home to reduce hiding places for bed bugs.

My father is remaining at a lodging at present for work. He found a blood sucker quite recently and we are stressed he will carry them into the house. We advised him to strip down in the carport that we would toss his garments and shoes promptly into the washer. What further advances would it be advisable for us to take? How would we get HIM inside?

Stay out of people's trash!!! If you see something in the trash that just seems too good to be true, it is. Just walk away.

Give him a towel and have come inside and shower. Bed bugs usually do not stay on a person. They bite and leave.

You need to address all luggage. Spray it down with a product made to kill bed bugs.

You can also vacuum the luggage and then throw the vacuum bag out immediately or clean the bag less vacuum container with alcohol. You can also wipe down the luggage with alcohol on a cotton ball in the places you didn’t reach with the vacuum.

Make sure to do this in the garage or outside. Put  all clothes in a plastic bag then take it to the washer.

It's luggage that's usually the problem, not clothes. Unpack outside, through everything in the wash, and then leave the luggage outside or spray it with one of the bedbug sprays that you can get in a hardware or home improvement store. They hide in the linings of the luggage.

Heat kills bedbugs so throw his clothes in the dryer for 45 minutes.
