Can you help me with English please?

The Mayflower was bound for Virginia, but a hurricane blew it off course.

What does this idiom "to blew it off course" mean exactly?

The greenhouse effect occurs when the Earth's atmosphere traps heat radiating from the Sun.

What does "traps" mean?

Heat is a noun or a verb in this case?

Thank you.

When a ship goes from one place to another, the captain plots a course. This means that the captain creates a route from where they leave to where they arrive, so that they can have a safe journey. To be blown off course means the hurricane took the ship away from the route they were on, and they had to try to get back to where they were, or at least figure out where the hurricane left them so the captain could plot another course to get to their destination.

Trap, in this sentence, means that the heat from the sun was allowed to come down through the earth's atmosphere, but could not go back up through due to the greenhouse effect, thus, it was trapped close to the earth.

In this sentence 'heat' is a noun.
