i’m 17 and can’t do basic math?

i am almost 18 and can’t do basic math. i have trouble dividing and multiplying. i am in an IEP class (special math class). i’ve had an IEP since 3rd grade. it’s really embarrassing and i’m definitely behind my grade level (senior). i just want to know why i can’t do basic math.

Not everyone gets it and that's okay. Math was never my strong point and I was held back in math too. Some people can't write very well. Some people can't read very well. And those things are okay too.

I still count on my fingers and need a calculator. I've seen people with PhDs and doctors count on their fingers and use calculators. It's just not their strong point.

Maybe you could see your school counselor or school speech-language pathologist (which is a speech therapist. Don't be discouraged by speech-language :) We help with all kinds of skills!) Or your local speech-language pathologist. They may have some better answers. Maybe you could see a private tutor too. You have options and you're not alone, I promise.

unfortunately, it appears that your brain simply isn't wired up to do that ... it's not anything you can control and there likely is no remedy ... it's just randomness in action at the genetic level

Perhaps you can contact a therapist to give you a more definitive answer, but you most likely have some sort of learning impairment. No need to feel ashamed for not knowing basic math.
