The profit that the vendor makes per day by selling x pretzels is given by the function P(x)= -4x^2+2,400x-350 Find the number of pretzels that must be sold to maximize profit.

    When you have a quadratic, of the form ax² + bx + c, the equation for the line of symmetry is:

    x = -b/(2a)

    If you need help remembering this, it's the quadratic formula, but without the ±√ part.

    Plug in your values:

    a = -4

    b = 2400

    x = -2400 / (2 * -4)

    x = -2400 / -8

    x = 300

    That is the vertex of your parabola and since the leading coefficient (a = -4) is negative, the parabola is downward facing. That means the vertex is a maximum.

    Answer:

    The vendor must sell 300 pretzels to maximize profit.
