Storing loose batteries buried in coin jar?

only if there is the possibility of several of them shorting together, which would cause them to heat up and die. The probability of that is low, in my opinion, as you need 3-4 cells aligned correctly.
I'm assuming they are in a jar by themselves, not in a jar with lots of coins, which would make the probability of a short high.
