Yes, it most definitely can.  However, how old is old?  If the house was built after about 1960, you probably don't have anything to worry about.  But if the house was built prior to 1950s, then I'd been inclined to have the wiring (including the circuit box) inspected by a certified electrician or call the power company who'd likely do it for free.  Check the circuit breakers.  What kind are they?  Are they the modern black switch type?  Or are they the older screw-in type?  That should give you a good clue as to the age of the electrical system.  You can find out the exact age of the house by going on to home sites like Zillow.com and inputting the address.

Why is this question in the photography section?

I wouldn’t necessarily say an explosion, but certainly there is a fire hazard if all wiring, fixtures, and outlets are not brought up to modern standards and properly inspected.
