Why is a law professional called ' Lawyer 'in the US and ' Solicitor ' in England/ UK?

Anonymous is almost right. We do not have attorneys in the UK. We have lawyers. Those are then subdivided into solicitors and barristers. A solicitor will engage a barrister for court representation.

In the UK, there are actually two types: solicitor and attorney. In the U.S., one person does both things, so the generic term "lawyer" covers both.

First of all, there are two kinds of attorneys in the UK: solicitors and barristers. Solicitors do most of their work in a law office and barristers represent their clients in court.
Use of English varies greatly amongst English speaking countries.
