As someone who recognizes slavery as morally wrong, do you support renaming all US military bases that were named for Confederate figures?

The South's behavior was treasonous and I prefer confederate relics in the museum for posterity so future generations don't lose sight of what the South hath wrought. As it relates to renaming military bases, that's not my call but I trust the channels w/ the call will do the right thing ... eventually. I'm in no hurry.

No not support renaming. That War was 155 years ago, centuries past In my opinion it is ridiculous for current Black Americans and Leftists to misuse things from so long ago from a world that no longer exists to make their political hay today.

It is a subversion and misuse of history by 1 political faction to make propaganda by twisting the past to their today's agenda.

"I think the problem we have today is most Americans have a difficult time accepting the past because we read into the past the prejudices of the present. The moment you do that, you're not dealing with history." - Ed Smith, Professor American University

What happened in the past is no reason to re-write history just because you have an opinion that differs from what was acceptable at the time.

The Civil War was over 145 years ago - it has no bearing on events of today. You can't erase what happened and you can't claim it didn't happen (deniers) - so what reason do you or anyone else have for wanting to change things?

The general rule of thumb in life is, "if you don't like something, you don't have to be around it". Follow this advice and before long it won't be an issue for you.

These names need to be remembered for their evil part in the history of the USA. To preserve authenticity. Remember that the army is to kill as well as defend.

Yes, but not because they were former slave owners, but because it just isn't right to name a US military base after someone who fought against the United States.

I don't believe in hiding the truth from future generations, no.

Rename the base. The name of a military base to me, means nothing.

It's the lessons we learn from historical figures.

And, if we erase their names and their stories from history, we are at risk of repeating the same mistakes in the future.

Take a look at Germany. Do they hide the names of the Nazis? Do they brush it all under a rug and hope someone forgets about what happened?

    No.

It's still there, in museums. It's there for anyone to go and see. It's all available and out in the open. Why is that?

That's so that we never forget it.

And that's what should happen here.

Yet there seems to be confused people who want to erase it all from history. Because they think that, somehow by keeping the names, the statues, and all the things that remind us of it, it will solve racism.

Racism does not live in a name, or in a museum, or in a statue........racism lives in minds and hearts of hateful, confused, bitter people.

That is what needs to change. To erase racism, change people's hearts and minds and replace their hate with love and understanding.

This can't be accomplished by re-naming things and tearing down statues.
