Correction: You were born with MILD Autism. That is the preferred term for your situation. The phrase "high functioning" was invented by Hans Asperger, who was a Nazi doctor. Asperger believed that certain people with what he called "high functioning" Autism could be trained to do menial tasks for the benefit of the Reich. Everyone ELSE on the spectrum, however- well in his mind, they deserved DEATH. And DIE they did- by the hundreds of thousands. The Jews weren't the Nazis' only targets, you know. Basically, anybody who wasn't 100% white, Protestant, blond haired, blue eyed, and loyal to the Fatherland was either killed or sent to the work/concentration camps. That included Catholics, homosexuals, transgendered people, anyone with any kind of physical or psychological disability, anyone who wasn't white, and on and on.

The reason why you were laughed at and picked on was because in the minds of a lot of people, anyone who is any way different from whatever the accepted standard of "normal" or "cool" happens to be is automatically considered to be "unacceptable" and therefore is a target for abuse- including the teasing and name calling you endured. I know what you've experienced, because I've been there too. I was also born with mild Autism, and like you, I went through utter HELL when was growing up and in school. Being labeled as "different" is a huge stigma, as you are undoubtedly well aware. It makes you a target, and what's worse, once you have the label, it will follow you for life.

The adults who laughed at you did so because they were either mean spirited, ignorant, or a combination of both. We live in a society that is extremely intolerant towards anyone who doesn't meet the public perception of "normal". And there simply too many people around- adults and kids alike- who think that those with Autism spectrum disorders are "sick" (in other words, they think that Autism is a disease) or that they are somehow "broken" and need to be "fixed". None of that is true, however. Yes, Autism is severe in some individuals. But not everyone is like that.
