Suppose a new particle is discovered, and it is found that a beam of these particles passes undeflected through “crossed” electric and magnetic fields, where E = 471 V/m and B = 0.00151 T. If the electric field is turned off, the particles move in the magnetic field in circular paths of radius r = 2.89 cm.
Determine q/m
for the particles from these data.
Answer in units of C/kg

With the E field on, e-force = mag force
q*E = q*v*B → → v = E/B = 471V/m / 0.00151T = 3.12e5 m/s
With the E field off, centripetal force = mag force
mv²/r = qvB
q/m = v / Br = 3.12e5m/s / (0.00151T*0.0289m) = 7.15e9 C/kg
