I had a large rat in my shed once. I would have felt less violated and angered if a squirrel invaded my space. Though a squirrel would have met the same fate as the rat.
They can be outside all they want. The second they step into my house, garage, or shed they are fair game.
The skunk that tried to shack up under the shed was saved by me not being able to legally discharge a firearm within city limits.
I dammed up around the bottom of the shed and flooded him out. And continued to do so for a few days. It found a new home. Next door. It sprayed my dog after he moved 😫 I felt challenged more than scared or violated with the skunk. Then betrayed after it sprayed my dog. If there's ever another skunk it is going to eat one.

I'd be more worried about a large rat.

Neither one. They are both rodents, and I love them all.
The main difference between a squirrel and a rat is that one is diurnal, and one is nocturnal. They eat the same food, they act pretty much the same. Squirrels are less shy, though.
