English Question PLS HELP!!!!?

In the Grapes of Wrath, what is "the crime... that goes beyond denunciation?"

The Grapes of Wrath takes place during the Great Depression, it's by John Steinbeck

    The crime is greed and the social and economic systems that support this greed, by destroying food that people need in order to survive. (If you read the entire passage, that's what it's talking about, how crops are destroyed if they can't be sold because if they were given away, the price would drop.)

    Need some context.  Where in the story is it, who says it, etc.

    EDIT:  I KNOW that.  I've read the book.  I meant, what CHARACTER says it, and what is going on in the story at that point?
