Sadly, some of those who are really able to support themselves would rather seek welfare money, in the form of SSI.

So, I would agree, but the freeloaders have made SSI a budget buster!!

NOT even close... 3 times that plus inflation or increase the value of the dollar so a little goes a long way...

Learn to invest and grow it. The best way to do that is to get together with other people in a similar circumstance and pool your resources to give you a larger principal to invest while helping each other minimize expenses and maximize available resources through all possible networks of family, friends, Church, etc...

People foolishly 'go-it-alone' then expect government or public programs to carry the whole load for them while ignoring the fact that other people have worked hard and sacrificed to get you those resources and help you when you cannot work for yourself.

The programs inevitably have a lot of waste and corruption inherent in them too which costs the public even more. Demanding more and more from the programs only makes this situation worse, especially when you are not doing all you can yourself to take full advantage of society's opportunities.

INVEST???  NO!  1st of all, you can't have more than $2000 in resources...2nd even if you could set some aside,  it wouldn't be much...what are people supposed to do?  only eat every other day, wear clothes for a few days without washing?  glues leaves together to make clothes?

not in most areas.  there are limited very low cost areas where you can manage.  The first S stands for SUPPLEMENTAL.  it is not meant to be the only means of support.  In an ideal world, the person with the disability would live with family and only need the SSI to pay a small amount of rent and for their personal needs, and the family would pay the rest (ie pay for the  family car, internet, etc)

even with section 8, SNAP, free phone, energy assistance, it is very difficult, especially with complicated medical needs.

many people on SSI are able to work and need to to get a job to supplement the SSI.

Once study suggested somewhere between 40-60% of people on SSI/SSDI could in fact actually work gainfully and were not entitled to benefits.

and many of the 40-60% that can qualify can work part time.  I know 5 people off hand that are legitimately on disability, 4 could work part time 18-24 hours per week.  2 of them do work for cash and don't report it.  The 3rd and 4th have a regular job that is reported.  They all have SSDI so the benefit amount is not affected by the income (although the IRS will have an issue if the ones getting cash are found out).

There is one other woman that can work, but would have a hard time finding a job (she has limited use of her hands and uses a motorized wheelchair.  she will probably work once she finishes college).

I know another that could work part time low wage, but I don't know what he is doing as I haven't seen him since high school.

It all depends on where you live, honestly. 800$ is quite small a "salary", but at least the good part is that it isn't taxable. If you have a house (paid for in full), a car, be economic with electricity, water usage, etc., then 800$ should really be enough for you. How much do you pay in bills anyway??

It could be if your house is paid off, you have no car expenses and you’re conservative with your spending.
