My cars engine oil has a strong gasoline smell and it started the second try?

Today my car didn't start on the first go and started up on the second go. Out of curiosity i checked the engine oil and it smelled like straight up gasoline. Is this bad?

I been in auto repair business for 35+ years and have never been able to snort up gasoline from the oil dip stick or from the filler hole.  Gasoline evaporates in hot engine oil. Also most would have burned above the piston near the spark plug and out the exhaust pipe.

, So, I am saying you are WRONG if you think that smell is gasoline or it is actually leaking on the fuel line connections.   Run your finger around each hose that contains fuel especially on the bottom side (cuz of gravity) and look at the finger.  It it wet.?  Gas is seeping out there. Engine is running and generally cold while you are doing this  because on a cold engine gas does not evaporate as fast so finger surface will be wetter.(and also you do not burn yourself)

Starting on the first go ONLY HAPPENS IN THE MOVIES.  REAL LIFE IS DIFFERENT.  WE DON'T THINK TWICE ABOUT IT.  It is just "normal"

High mileage is causing fuel to bypass the piston rings

Use a heavier weight engine oil

Was the oil level HIGHER than normal?

    Which car?

    Where is the fuel pump?

Do you have electronic fuel injection?

You don't want gasoline in the oil.

Sadly gasoline contamination of the oil is very common among direct injection type engines since they spray raw gas directly into the cylinders where it contacts and mixes with the oil.

Going too long between oil changes makes it worse.

The use of ultra thin oils has also contributed to the problem since the gasoline further thins the oil making it too thin and causing excess wear of engine components and oil consumption

YESP YESP YESP! my computer has a LISP! DO NOT DRIVE IT or you can deStory your engien bearings! THe THING is perhaps a BAD FUEL PRESSURE REGULAOTR that is dumping RAW GAS into ONE clyidner! ALWAYS Lis the CAR MAKER< the YEAR< the MODEL< the MILEAGE and the MILEAGE with your w question! This is why VALVOLINE should be off the market! TI gives off CORROSIVE VAPORS that DISSOLVE rubber gaswkets and SEALS and PCV HOSES! It is made from ASH and WAX and retuns to ASH and WAX and leAves COATINS baking inot the enigne block you do not even SEE!ALL WAX based oils shold be OUTLAWED as polluters and DANGERS to the car owners! chances are THAT THE diaphragm IN YOUR fpr S DISSOLVED AND NOW raw gas IS GOING INTO one cylinder< the one closest to the pressure regulator! START with an ENGINE WASHIGN using GUNK ORIGINAL ORANGE engein cleaner at a DIY cAr wash! The FPR is on the FUEL RAIL with a VACUUM Line to it! Pulloff the VACUUM LINe ad see if GAS spurts out of it! If it DOES you need to REPLACE IT QUICKLY ! STOP DRIVING THIS THING before you blow it up! I assume there is a DIY car wash close by, but CHANGE THE OIL NOW! use only PENNZOIL ULTRA PLATINUM OIL the at is FULLY SYNTHETIC and gives you a warranty out to 500,000 MILES.  ONce the oil is pulluted ith GASOLINE it is RUIN#ED! I wodul bet yo have over 100,000  iles on whatever this car is! Change your fuel filter as well WELL. .  a CLOGGED FILTER can FEEL like a BAD TRANSMISSION.  IF your BRAKE FLUID is DARK BRWON< POWER FLUSH out the OD LD fluid and repalce with FRESH fluid! Brake fluid that is BW ROWN ins dana gerous as it gets MORE and MROE corroc xive and will EVENTUALLY turn into LIQUID SANDPAPER and SLUDGE that wil RUIN the master cylidner, ROT the BRAKE LINES and HOSES and make clipers ROT as the sandpaper ruins the castings internally!

    Some Hondas will

leak gasoline into the cylinders and it washes down into the crankcase. There is a fix for that. Tell us what car you have. It is bad for fuel to dilute oil. Get an oil change asap.

The way to test motor oil to find out if there is gasoline in it is simple. Pull the dipstick out and try to light it with a BIC lighter. If the oil ignites it has gasoline in it. Just oil on the dipstick will not burn. Check around the fuel injectors to make sure there are no leaks at the fuel injector o-rings.

Contamination is bad. You've got to figure out where the fuel leak is coming from.

You have a leaking fuel injector and it's running and dribbling all the time pouring gasoline into the manifold straight down into the oil. Get it fixed ASAP before your engine catches on fire.

Year make and model.  Engine oil smelling like gas is bad.  Engine might have a stuck open injector or just bad plugs.  Take your car to a mechanic or get an oil change immediately.
