Was Bishop Berkeley and his ideas controversial in his own time?

YES, and that is something that you could have easily determined for yourself with a minimal amount of effort. I highly recommend that you learn to be more self-reliant.Your life will be better for it.

Perhaps the major back-and-forth was Bishop Berkeley's re-centering of Descartes' awareness that God's "I Am *that* I Am" is the principle Idea God imparts to man.  Bishop Berkeley held that all true ideas come of God's Mind (similar to Plotinus' "One Mind Soul" Realization). This re-centering was controversial, as Descartes was blessedly esteemed.
