What happens to released prisoners in the US?

I live in the UK and I know when prisoners are released in the UK, although it is very difficult for them to find a job with their criminal record, I imagine they still manage to find a place to live due to the benefits system in the UK.

However I just clocked that in the US there's no such thing as benefits. So do all released prisoners end up homeless or what?

In the city where I live a great number of them do end up in homeless encampments where they abuse and shakedown the other homeless persons.

The US has "benefits." We just have other words for them, like "welfare", "social security", "housing assistance", and "food stamps." Released convicts can collect welfare, just like anyone else. Unless they are disabled, though, most welfare program require the person to be actively seeking or in employment; they can't just sit on their ***.

Former prisoners in the US, just like everyone else, have to find gainful employment, or yes, they do end up homeless.
