Which verb sounds better in this context:

a) "As he passed by me, he PLACED his hand on my shoulder, and said: 'Don't be so sad. These things happen"

or

b) "As he passed by me, he LAID his hand on my shoulder, and said: 'Don't be so sad. These things happen"

    Both are grammatically correct and sound perfectly normal.

    Placed sounds better to me. Laid has other connotations.
