Anxiety over job switch and need help?

I worked for a not for profit company of 900 employees. My department of 200 employees was bought out by a large private company as they are focusing on a new area for business. I have been there for 6 months and so far so good.  However since this company is a big company that has shareholders they do layoffs which I’m not used to. It gives me anxiety as I have a family mortgage etc...  I made a mistake and did research online and of course you read mostly bad things.

Anyone feel this way? It’s just almost everyday I worry.

Have a backup plan.  Face them and ask about your job security.  If you get the feeling that you are in line, be prepared to look for another job.

No point in getting anxious over it, because that won’t make any difference. If you are truly concerned about layoffs and worried that you could be vulnerable because you’ve only been there six months, you dust off your resume and quietly start looking for another opportunity. Sometimes layoffs hit the least senior employees, but sometimes the people laid off are more senior because they tend to pull bigger salaries. No point in worrying about something out of your control. Just get your game plan in place and be ready.

And if you should happen to get laid off, you would qualify for unemployment, which should provide a little short term relief while you find your next opportunity.
