what happened to the trenches after world war 1?

    Eventually filled in.

    Most were filled in, and the land went back to being farmland.

    Some were preserved for posterity.

    Some are still there. I've walked round them.

    Well, I say "still". It must have been 35 years ago when I was there.

    They were all filled up with plaster of Paris and the resultant casts were sent to all the participants of the war to display in their gardens for the amusement of passers by and friends & relatives.
