Baal is equivalent to Belos, Bel Marduk, Zeus and assumes a "lord of the mountain" and "storm god" role in paganism. Baal was the son of the Canaanite El - equivalent to Kronos and Saturn. Kronos is said to have devoured his children and also represents time and old age. Zeus overthrew Kronos and took his role as the ruler of the gods. Both figures represent kingship. Moloch (similar to "melech" i.e. "king") is essentially the Kronos archetype - for this reason child sacrifice was ritualized within cults that were devoted to him. As Zeus took the place of Kronos, Baal (literally "lord") also took the place of El, and also required child sacrifice. The child sacrifice ritual was symbolic to how kings required their subjects to die for them in wars, whored out their daughters, and sacrifice their freedoms and claimed the products of their labor. For this reason Samuel warned the ancient Israelites from electing a king.

Children given to Baal were sacrificed. Children given to Moloch were burned alive.
