My best friend is my hairstylist, how do i tell her im going to a different salon?

My best friend owns her own salon & she's done my hair for years since she started her business. Last year we did a fun although high maintenance vibrant red color & keeping up with it has been a challenge especially in quarantine. Recently my bestie gave birth to the sweetest baby so she is on maternity leave for the next few months. After a year of trying to maintain my fire cracker red hair I'm just ready to go back to my natural low maintenance color. Since my bestie is on maternity leave a friend of a friend who also works in her own salon offered to do a one time color job on me. Obviously I feel guilty going to anyone but my bestie but my roots are already so awful & I'm just ready to go back to my natural color. I already have an appointment scheduled with my bestie after she goes back to work. I guess I'm just wondering how to tell her I'm going to let someone else do my hair this one time? I want to be respectful of her business and not offend her but i also don't know if i can wait 3 months to fix my hair. Any stylists out there who can help me with what to say? what would you want to hear if it was you?

Your friend isn't available so you're going to another stylist. It would be very unprofessional of her to take umbrage at this no matter how much you two are friends! Wearing hair you hate is like wearing a dress you hate. It would be unreasonable for your friend to expect you to wear hair you hate for months until she returns from maternity leave and can fit you in for an appointment.

What you need to avoid is making a big deal of this, as if you're guilty of wrong doing. Do not make an announcement of this, like "I'm having someone else do my hair!" She will notice it on her own, will readily see that someone else has cut, colored, or otherwise modified your hair. Again, if she takes offense, then she's out of line. A good friend would tell you "I like your hair!" right?

When she returns from maternity leave, will you be going back to your friend? If yes, then be clear and firm about what you want for your hair. Don't let yourself be maneuvered into saying yes to a color or style you'd rather say no to. And if your requests for a low maintenance cut are ignored, you say something like "Bestie, the haircuts you've given me are the most beautiful cuts I've ever had. But I've been thinking that maybe one of your colleagues is a better choice for getting a low maintenance cut. I'm tired of being so beautiful and want wash & wear hair."

DO NOT let that turn into you getting a perm, OK?

Try having to wait 6+ months to get a hair cut due to lock downs. I had an appointment a few weeks ago (not at my regular salon), but they decided to lock down on the day I had my appointment.

Just be honest with her. Tell her it's a one time thing. I'm sure she would understand, other clients of hers will have to wait too.

Or you can try to fix it your self at home.

Don't feel guilty, you do what you have to do.

way over thinking this. She is on maternity leave and I am sure she realizes that people cant wait three months to get their hair done. Do not worry. Its a one and done.
