Which of the following values best represents the value of the unknown mass based on the data collected?

Students are designing a lab that will yield the inertial mass of an unknown object using a spring of an unknown spring constant, common lab supplies, and the unknown mass. They hang the spring on a hook suspended from a horizontal rod; then add single masses and combinations of masses to the spring. They collect data on the mass on the spring and the corresponding length of the spring as shown in the data table below. They then place the unknown mass on the spring, measure the length of the spring and find it is stretched to 35.5 cm. Finally, they pull down on the mass and allow it to vibrate in simple harmonic motion. They time ten periods of vibration and find that this takes 11 s.

Which of the following values best represents the value of the unknown mass based on the data collected?

A 245g

B 285g

C 383g

D 1400g

You should graph these to get the gradient but I will simply cheat.  from 20 g to 170 g you have ADDED 150 g and the spring has stretched BY 18.4 cm ie 0.123 cm/g

to reach 35.5 you have gained 9.6 cm which has needed an extra 78g ie a total of 248g  Clearly A is the closest.  If you drew a graph you could get the answer more accurately and just read it off your graph.  ( The one that YOU drew).
