Is The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins a good book if I want to learn about and understand the viewpoints of atheism?

Perhaps, but those that read "The Devil's Delusions" By Dr. David Berlinsky will have the tools to beat your arguments.

Is the bible a good book for understanding theists?  The answer is that it only works for some of them.  So it might not help you with Islam, or Hinduism.

To understand my view of atheism you are probably just as well reading a few good history books.  You can probably make a go of it by looking at other ancient religions of the time and cross mapping their stories and beliefs.  Try the Encyclopedia Britannica with emphasis on Sumerian deities.

It will give you some of their arguments.  I would follow it up by watching "The God Delusion Debate" between Dawkins and Lennox:  https://youtu.be/zF5bPI92-5o

There is one and only one point of view of atheism: not believing in gods.

The book you refer to does describe viewpoints but presents arguments supporting that one view.

A "good book" on the subject of ignorance sounds like a contradiction in terms.

Not really, just one if you want to understand some arguments against theism. But from an author who most of us aren't really all that comfortable with these days.

The thing about atheism is, it doesn't really have any view points. There are some atheist communities and organizations out there, but none of them are something all atheists are on board with.

Source(s): If there is something it seems a majority of us subscribe to, it's probably scientific skepticism. I think a great book that covers that is Carl Sagan's, "Demon Haunted World" but I know some of us consider Sagan a little too old school and stuffy for today.

I haven't read it but, from what I've heard, it's not a great book.

A better book, from what I've heard is, "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris.

  • It is not so complicated as all of that...

Yes, it is a very good book to start with. Move on to "God is Not Great" by the late, great, Christopher Hitchens.

it's richard dorkids atheist manifesto, dear.  Sadly it's quite delusional that it might as well be called the atheist delusion, dear.
