I have a freind who does not speak nor read English very well, and he asked me to look at a notice he got from Social Security?
He has been receiving SSI benefits for quite a long time, and he just received a letter showing that he had a small amount of money in the bank over the $2,000.00 limit per month to receive the benefits he already received in some months 2012 and 2013, and saying he can request a "hearing." I am just trying to help out a neighbor, and all I can find on the web is ssDi, nothing about plain SSI.
I want to help, to find someone to help him, and everything I find is regarding Disability Income. He is a widower and not receiving this due to a disability...does anybody have the slightest idea what I'm talking about? I feel bad for him, he is afraid he will stop receiving benefits from now on and won't be able to pay his rent where he lives with his two children, but they are over 18. I am at a loss, and I'm no dummy, but the letter he received does not say if he owes money back, if he will no longer receive benefits, etc. Can somebody who knows more than me help me help him out?
I really appreciate it, (he is not that bright and does not understand the paperwork, (but neither do I!)
3 AnswersLaw & Ethics7 years agoIn inherited an African Violet when my 92 year old aunt died?
I found out that this belonged first to my grandmother, who has been gone since I was only 20 years old. The plant has a very thick and about three inches long curving stem, which is thicker at the base and tapers to thinner near the leaves and the leaves are limp. I have forgotten what I used to know about African violets, except I think I remember that you can cut this kind of stem off at the base and replant it in a sterile compound (can't remember it it's regular potting soil or sharp sand.) I really want to rescue this dying plant as there is so much sentimental value attached to it!! Can anyone give me good advice? Must I dust the stem in an anti-fungle product, and if so, what is best? I can't take a leaf cutting, the leaves are starting to feel very limp, like the plant isn't able to absorb the necessary water (or nutrients.) Thank you so much!....
1 AnswerGarden & Landscape8 years agoI have a question about a troubling message that has been appearing on my screen.?
It's called "Windows File Protection" and says Windows is "running unrecognized versions of files," and asks me to resolve this by inserting my CD, but I don't have one, was told it was already all inn computer when set up.
Other thing they said might be wrong is that "Your CD Rom isn't working."
I have no idea what to do about this, know little about computers, this is a Dell Dimension E510 and I use Windows XP.
Any enlightenment would be highly appreciated. My brother is away and he's the one who set it up, all he said was he was sure it was all installed properly when he set it up, and doesn't have time to help.
2 AnswersOther - Computers8 years agoI am looking for information from other women (or professionals) here about sexual activity.?
I haven't been sexually active for a few years, I am 62 and divorced for a long time. I have met someone I like very much, and though we are "taking it slow" and have not yet had intercourse, even just "very heavy petting" has caused me a urinary tract infection, then what the Gyn I saw at Planned Parenthood called "Vaginitis." (I was irritated and itchy, but knew it wasn't a yeast infection.) I have read that after a long period of time, some women who haven't been sexually active for a long time can keep getting infections as they are not used to it. (I have no problem with arousal or anything like that, which is a nice surprise,) but wonder what I can do about the possibility of getting infections over and over, as I have read in "Web, MD" magazine some women can continue to have this problem every time they have sex! Can anyone out there give me any tips until I get another appointment with a Gynecologist? (I was tested for all STD' a couple of months ago and am fine in that area, as is my "partner.")
2 AnswersWomen's Health8 years agoI have a question about soil for bulb planting?
Hi, I live in the city in an old building and have a large varnished wooden flower box overhanging one front window. I have some Vinca growing in the middle front, it over winters well. I have just a few Grape Hyacinths, Crocus. and Daffodils to plant in the box now, in the Fall in New England. I have some Left over potting soil, it's not the best but I can't get out so it will do. I know when I had my own yard years ago I always nourished the soil with Bone Meal for Spring Bulbs.
Does anyone have any idea what household products on hand or I could have a friend pick up that would do the same thing as the Bone Meal? I have Baking Soda, Epsom Salts, (sorry if I sound dumb, but I know there are many "old" strategies people still know about for lots of things!) Can anyone help me? I want to plant them tomorrow before the soil freezes!!!
2 AnswersGarden & Landscape9 years agoI want to make chocolate frosting using, canned cream cheese frosting, cocoa or chocolate chips?
I need to make a birthday cake today. I have a French vanilla cake mix, and would like to make it with either cherry or peach-raspberry jam for filling, and need to know how to make the vanilla cream cheese frosting in a can to a chocolate one using cocoa and/or chocolate chips.
Does anyone know how I can do this? I can't get out, so need to use what's on hand. I was planning on using jam for the center instead of frosting, and would like an opinion on using the peach-raspberry or cherry preserves, plus cocoa and/or chocolate chips to make the can of frosting into a nice chocolate frosting. I wanted to make a chocolate ganache for the outside, but have no cream. I do have sour cream but don't think that will work.
I'd appreciate any suggestions, including if the peach-raspberry jam will taste good for the middle. (I also have some cherry preserves.)
Please help! I am not a baker and don't like sweets myself, but it's my husband's birthday and I need to use what I have on hand. Thanks very much, I want to make it today for tomorrow. (I only have one cake mix, (French Vanilla,) and want to make this special!!!
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes9 years agoMy dishwasher is giving off an odor?
A couple of weeks ago someone piled a huge load of filthy dishes and pots and everything into my dishwasher. Needless to say, everything was filmy or not really clean, and when I went to pull out the bottom rack there was a distasteful odor, like something "old." Should I just use one of those dishwasher cleaners I have heard about?
3 AnswersCleaning & Laundry10 years agoAm I making my computer vulnerable?
I have been leaving "Pandora Radio" open at night when I go to bed, as it helps me to fall asleep if I make a "custom mix" of stuff that relaxes me. It stops playing after a certain lenghth of time, and when I'm awake I see the message "are You Still Listening? so hours won't be wasted. If you want it to continue, you click on "YES", Now, If I don't close it after (not sure how long,) and I just fall asleep without getting up to sign out and close it, am I leaving my computer security vulnerable? I need to know if I can safely continue to do this. I have been having problems with "highjacking" of my contacts, spyware and/or viruses, I don't know that much, my friend knows a bit more, (but sometimes is wrong) and just told me that I can't leave a program open at night because that's "when spyware gets in, if you leave something open all night." Can anybody out there in "cyberworld" help me?
7 AnswersSecurity1 decade agoHow to keep Roasted Red Peppers in a jar fresher longer?
I love roasted red peppers, have made my own, but often buy them at the supermarket in a jar, like "Mancini" brand. I have a big problem keeping them from getting moldy awfully fast, and am tired of wasting them. I have tried putting them in little packages in the freezer, but feel it compromises the texture a bit. Someone suggested draining a little of the liquid out and topping the jar off with a little olive oil. Has anybody got an opinion or knowledge about if this is a good idea? Thanks much
3 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade agoQuestion about vet care for cats I can't afford?
Hi. I am on SSD, (little income) divorced from somebody who keeps calling them our kitties "his" who is "overextended" and need to get medical care for my 2 cats, one 16 years old w/diminished lung capacity from "his" second-hand smoke, and is almost totally deaf now. I don't let him go outside anymore because he seems to get lost and I can't find him (2X for days.) The other is an about 5-6 year old female he brought home as a "stray,) who is a sweetie, but has taken a lot of the dominant role as to where my "son" Smokes can sleep or sit to look out the window. She has started urinating on the kitchen floor (for a while, every now and then) and I don't think she's "acting out" I think she must have a physical problem she's trying to let me know about. I am dismayed and at a loss as to how to get the proper care for them, and have tried everything with no results, except that "he" (not bad guy-just ...) has a "Care Credit Card" which can be used for Vet help. I have one of his cards myself, and would find some way to pay a monthly bill if they can accommodate my circumstances. As it is, I have no car, so I'll have to bribe and pay somebody to help me get there. Sorry this is so long, but since "their" Dad is so self-involved right now and has no money (Like I do?) I had excellent credit until we got married! (besides the point, sorry.) Please, any suggestions? Like call the "care Credit myself (he still calls me "his wife" to everybody) I am really worried about them, and do all I can by myself, but know they need care now and all he says when I mention it is "I'll come and get Smokes and have him put down, and pay for it, he's getting old." Thanks for listening, if nothing else. A note - the reason I have no credit is he agreed to pay off credit cards in lieu of Alimony back in 2001, but now laughs and said he wouldn't have done either ,anyway as he can work as an independent contractor "under the table" and claim he has no money
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoHas anyone tryed that "Five Hour 2 oz. Energy drink?"?
I am 59, and have chronic pain that really zaps my energy. I saw this stuff once at a convenience store and bought one, and I thought I got a bit more energy and could focus better. I'd like opinions on the effectiveness before I spend any money on it. I read up on it and it appears to have nothing "bad" for you in it, except maybe the amount of caffeine in I cup of coffee. Thanks
3 AnswersNon-Alcoholic Drinks1 decade agoWhy is my (female, spayed) cat suddenly deciding to pee on the kitchen floor?
I have two cats and they have always shared a litter box, which I always make sure is clean for them. A few months ago, my female kitty started occasionally leaving large amounts of urine on the kitchen floor in front of the sink, I usually wake up to find it. I've never had a cat that did this before. I am in a bad situation where I haven't got enough money to take her to the vet to have her examined (which I'm ashamed of, I have always taken my pets to regular vet visits in the past, but circumstances have changed drastically, and there is no way I can take her.) Is there please anyone out there who knows a lot about cats? Maybe even a vet assistant or something? (Although a suggestion from a veterinarian would be great, I don't expect that! Thanks so much to anyone who can help
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoI have a question regarding why a car won't start?
This is an '87 Toyota Camry LE my husband I bought. It isn't Classic for another two years, but it's got "Early American" plates. Just about everything mechanical that was necessary (or MIGHT be necessary was done to it: new, powerful battery, new starter, new little thing that has to do with starter (forgot what it's called, it's not near the engine,) new distributor cap, points and plugs (wires) a new alternator was our last resort because what else could it be? This is a beautiful car, he's fixed details on the body and shampooed the upholstery, (The seats were like new, you can tell nobody ever smoked in this car) and it was a one-owner car, always garaged, until we bought it about 4 months ago. He's had all the work done by a reputable mechanic several of his friends go to, and is not stupid about cars himself.
Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it, he won't ask. He did say a while ago they attached it to one of those "diagnostic" machines, I think it was before he got the alternator.
He is so happy to finally have a car, and it's one that people stop us and want to talk about. He's a painter. is looking for a pickup for himself, then I get the toyota and I am disabled, can't walk anywere, what a Godsend that would be, I haven't driven in 15 years!
Again, we'd really appreciate any ideas. Thanks, by the way, it doesn't even "turn over" or try to, nothing happens when you turn the key.
2 AnswersOther - Cars & Transportation1 decade agoDoes anyone know the Cole Slaw recipe for any of these restaurants?
I am a good cook, but make lousy cole slaw, I don't even like it! I love the Cole Slaw at Shady Glenn Restaurant in Manchester, Connecticut. I also like Friendly's and KFC isn't BAD....
I slice my cabbage into long, paper thin strips, put a little bit of sugar, salt ,pepper and cider vinegar (sometimes I add a little Dijon mustard) in the bottom of the bowl. and I shred carrots into it, and sometimes a bit of red cabbage. Anyway, when I have all the ingredients ready, (having whisked the "dressing" in the bottom,) and add a small amount of mayonnaise. It is always soggy and limp and I don't like the flavor. I guess this way of making it came from the way my mom made it, sliced the cabbage this way, but with a little bit of vegetable oil, the cider vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper, but no mayonnaise, and as everything was chilled when she made it, she just stuck in in the fridge for a bit, and it was tangy and crispy. I like a creamier dressing, and can't believe that after all these years I haven't found one that combines creaminess with tartness. Does anyone have any idea what I'm talking about? Any help would be appreciated: I can't remember the site but once someone on here gave me a link to exactly the ingredients in a common bean dip I wanted to make at home, but I don't know where to look. Also, the restaurants: I grew up near Shady Glenn in Manchester, CT and went there from the time I was a little kid (I'm 59 now!) but am now disabled and have no way to get there to ask if they'd give me the recipe, or Friendly's, and I guess as a last resort, KFC. I've had good cole slaw in lots of diners all over the place for years, but can't even remember their names!
I'd appreciate any help, it's embarrassing, because I'm supposed to be known as this great cook and everybody looks forward to what I bring to pot lucks and holidays. Thank God nobody's asked me to bring cole slaw!
4 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoI'm looking for a latch hook to make a rug?
I have a latch hook rug kit somebody gave me that I want to make in the fall. I am also looking into making a small one for my bedroom as soon as possible. The kit I was given came with no hook (and the "giver" checked with the person who bought it and she said the hooks don't come with the kits. I am having trouble finding them on the web, all I find is a Co. that has all different kinds, very confusing-doesn't say what each is for. Can anybody help me? I live in the Hartford area of Connecticut, and have to take the bus and can't walk too far (arthritis in my back.) so buy most things on line. I thought the hooks were all the same or at least there was a "basic" one! I'm at end of my yarn (smile!) Thanks.
2 AnswersDecorating & Remodeling1 decade agoI have a question about a grain I bought?
I was looking for Barley in the supermarket in New England, to make Beef & Barley soup. They were out of Barley and I looked at the bags of grains, and find something Peruvian called "Trigo Resbalado" and underneath it says: Hulled Wheat." Can anybody tell me how I can use this? I'm a good cook, but know nothing about Peruvian Cuisine. I really want to know if I can use this in place of Barley. Thanks.

I am not very computer literate, had never used a PC until my brother bought me this one about 3 years ago, and can't sit at my computer for long periods of time to figure it out as I have a very bad back and now have to limit the amount of time I spend on it, so I'm hoping for a "shortcut" that will save time.
If anyone is willing to help me out, (if it's possible) I would really appreciate it much. Thanks a lot! I have Windows XP 8, and an "sbcglobal.net" account.

1 AnswerPassword and Sign In1 decade agoI am looking for a new meatloaf recipe. Can someone help?
I make a meatloaf I've been making for years that I love, but my husband said he wished I could make one that is more "dense" as mine "crumbles" a little when sliced. I make mine into a loaf shape and bake it on a sheet pan, have never used the rectangular pans I have for anything but cakes and breads. I have always heard that meatloaf made in a pan is "greasy" and not as good as ones made the way I do. Does anybody have a good recipe (who can figure out what I'm talking about?) BTW, my husband is allergic to onions and garlic (which makes it very hard for me to cook, I have to use "powder" instead of the real thing. Thanks to anyone who can help me out here!
