  • Do I need to seal a cement bird bath?

I know I have to let the cement cure for 30 days before sealing. My question is whether I even NEED to seal the inner basin. I know many cement sealers are not meant to be under water and petroleum based sealers can be toxic to birds. My thought was to seal the outer area but leave the basin unsealed. Don't want to kill off the birds. Or can I leave the entire bath unsealed?

  • I wonder if some bird lover could tell me a type of sealer to put in the bowl of a cement birdbath. Nontoxic.?

I have made several birdbaths to give as gifts and want to waterproof the bowl . These baths are molded from a rhubarb leaf so have a lot of details. I have a product for the outside of the bath but need the name of a nontoxic sealer for the inside. I live in Canada and hope for the name of a product available here.

  • I have a West Highland Terrier who is usually very active. The last few days she is depressed and lethargic.?

Her appetite is good and she has no overt signs of illness. She just seems down. Has anyone else experienced this with their dogs? It has been very cold and snowy so she has not had the same level of exercise lately. I worry because she is usually such a happy thing but lately the tail is down more than up. Help please.

  • We have oak cupboards in our older, newly bought home, which have apparently never been cleaned.?

Especially over the stove, the grease build-up on the cupboards is just nasty. I have tried to get the layers of grease off with "elbow grease" but then the finish on the cupboard is also removed. Any ideas??? I have tried so-called de-greasers for cleaning and they did not help at all. HELP!!!

  • As a followup to my question about a very humid basement... There does not seem to be any water coming in.?

Nothing along the floor or coming down the walls etc. It seems to be condensation as the last person to answer my question indicated. We do not have a vapour barrier over the soil in the crawl space- I did not even know you could put one in, How would you do it?? The insulation in the walls was not a styrene type-it was the kind of styrofoam you might buy to make a fake gravestone for your front yard at Halloween or use for packing in a parcel. We considered foam but are not sure how it compares price-wise to regular bat insulation. We have two sump pumps and no doubt that is adding to the moisture as well since the wells are covered only by a wooden cap. Should those be sealed over with plastic as well? My last house was in the city and we had No humidity problems so this is a whole new experience. There is a bit of mold in one spot going up on the drywall- that will be yanked out tomorrow. Any further suggestions appreciated-especially how to put that vapour barrier on the dirt. Tx.

  • We have had a big problem with humidity in our basement. We have stripped it down to the bare walls.?

About 1/3 of the basement is a crawl space but the rest was supposedly finished. I have landscaped so that the water does not come in when it rains- the humidity is just +++. The walls had only cheap styrofoam insulation between the studs which were placed on with the 4" side against the wall. There was NO vapour barrier at all. If we insulate properly with the proper studding and put on a vapour barrier will this help with our humidity problem? Is there something else we should do? We have an air exchanger that runs well but when it is hot and humid outside the drywall in the basement is actually wet to touch. Should we put a sealer on the inside walls before we stud and insulate or is this not worth anything? We live in Ontario, Canada so our winters can be quite severe and the basement is cold. We also live fairly close to a river so the water table is quite high. Any suggestions from you handypeoples would be much appreciated. Thanks Loads.

  • We are considering getting a York heat pump to reduce our heating costs.Need to know if anyone has done this.?

We are currently on propane and pay around $5000 per year for fuel. If I switch to the heat pump I am concerned about how much higher my hydro bill will be. If hydro goes up by 100% it will take about 5 years for the unit to pay itself off. Anyone know how much extra hydro it will take? My back up furnace will be electric- high efficiency instead of propane. The salesman could not give us much of a range as to the increased hydro and we are waiting to see if any of his customers can tell us their experience but we could use help from anyone out there...Thanks

  • My 3 year old granddaughter has real problems going to bed at night. She screams for myself or her Mom.?

Or she gets up over and over. Her Mom and Dad recently seperated but bedtime has always been an issue. Any suggestions for my daughter to help make bedtime easier and pleasant instead of a fight? She also has an month old son so can't always "snuggle" to get the three year old to settle. Last night I sat outside the 3 year olds door and read. She settled right away and only asked once if I was there. Any ideas would be appreciated loads.

  • I am trying to buy a yamaha 1999 snowmobile from Vermont and bring it up to Canada. The VIN # has 9 characters

Customs tells me I need a VIN with 17 characters before they can run it on their computer. I own another yamaha snowmobile-1997- and it also has 9 characters in the VIN. Any ideas on why the VIN is only 9 characters and how do I find out about the 17 numbers.???

  • Anyone know anything about child custody laws in Ontario, Canada?

Kids are 4 months old and nearly three. My daughter has left her husband and wants to pursue mediation to work out the custody but her ex is adamant that he take them at least 40% of the time. She has been the primary care giver and he has shown very little interest in spending time doing things with them . At one point he indicated he wants them 40% of the time so he will not have to pay child support. He has bankrupted the family, lost the family home, vehicles, etc. He has spent most weekends kayaking or skiing and if he is not doing those sports he is resting because he is too tired to spend time with the kids. Can I reassure my daughter about her chances of having the kids live with her?She feels he should have liberal access rights and help in decision making but that having them going back and forth between homes at this age is not in the best interests of the children. Any suggestions?

  • Re previous question of daughter age 27 leaving husband We live in Ontario,Canada. Many thanks for kind words.

I agree that she is being manipulated by her soon to be ex. They are living 30 miles apart now and he says she will have to move to where he lives because the distance is too far for him to have easy access to his kids. He has even demanded that he be allowed to have the 4 month old for the weekend-even though he has spent a total of 40 minutes alone with the baby since birth. The babe is also totally breast-fed. I agree he will probably burn out from all the" togetherness" and reneg on his support but how to convince an emotionally abused girl of this. My daughter wants him and his family to be actively involved but the threats are wearing her down.He is the kind of guy who always has to be right and win at all costs. How do we call his bluffs? These kids are alrady the pawns and it has only been a week. We are writing down everything that he says but he will deny it anyway. Any great lawyers in Ottawa that anyone can recommend or what to look for in a good lawyer?

  • My daughter ,age 27 with a three year old and 4 month old has left her husband and moved in with us. Help???

She has done all the steps in the last week to file for custody of her children-applied for legal aid, found a lawyer, etc. Her husband is adamant that he get 50% custody of the kids even though he has basically ignored them up to this point. He even told my daughter that "it is not always what is best for the kids but what is best for the parent." He told her that he does not want to pay child support and this is his way of avoiding it. He has bankrupted them, borrowed thousands of dollars from family which we will never recover- but he does own a giant ,big screen TV, three kayaks etc. Does anyone have any idea on the chances of him getting 50% or how she can make the judge understand that while she does not want to cut him out of the kids lives, she wants the kids to have a stable home. He has even suggested that he may quit his 53,000$$ a year job "to ensure that he can have 50% custody. My daughter is terrified that he will convince the lawyers since he is a con-man.Any suggestions?
