My friend was recently diagnosed with a potentially terminal disease. Her parents 'disowned' her for divorcing her abusive husband several years ago and have barely spoken to her since. She has two young children with whom she has still allowed to have a relationship with.her estranged parents. However, due to her diagnosis, she does not want her children or any of her possessions to wind up with the people who wrote her out of their lives. Since she has not remarried, she wants to ensure her parents HAVE NOTHING to say about her care during her illness or 'inherit' anything when she is gone. How can she make sure they can NOT make medical decisions for her and can she legally divorce them?

My SO brought home two "zucchini" squashes from a neighbors. They're both large, but I noticed one had a much thicker skin (which I attributed to being 'older'). But when I cut it (very difficult to cut) it is more like a butternut squash on the inside. Thick outer skin and an orangey colored flesh. I am divorced with two children. Per our divorce, if my ex is current in his child support obligation, he will be able to take the deduction for ONE child. I signed the 8388 for 2009 as he was current and he took the deduction for our daughter. However, since the children reside with me and he them only every other weekend, I claimed the EIC for both children last year.

Yes, if you are the custodial parent and do not live with the father. There is a special rule in the case of divorced & separated parents. When the non-custodial parent is claiming the child as a dependent (exemption), child tax credit, and/or education credit; the custodial parent is still allowed to claim the same child for Earned Income Credit, Head of Household filing status, and day care credit. This "splitting of the child" is not available to parents who lived together at any time during the last 6 months of the year; then only one of you can claim the child for any tax reasons.

In the personal section of TurboTax, the custodial parent lists all the child's information, but on the drop down menu for "dependent type", selects "non-dependent -used for EIC/dependent care only"

Now I have rec'd a notice from the IRS advising me someone else (the ex) claimed my child as a deduction.

So, is the information from Turbo Tax incorrect?

My daughter dropped my BF's laptop and whether she caused the problem or not.......our repair shop said the computer is toast. The data is salvageable but right now we can't afford another laptop. Is it possible to transfer all his data to my laptop (a dell) ? Or would it be better to get a passport external hard drive and transfer the data to that until we can afford a new laptop for him? I'm open to suggestions, but keep in mind we're on a kind tight budget for now.
