  • Do people trust Protonmail email users?

An acquaintance recently said to me he thinks the many people don't trust Protonmail users, citing that they're untrustworthy, seen as likely scammers etc because of the encryption Protonmail uses.

Is there any creditable truth to this paranoia or is he talking out of his posterior?

I think if anything, Protonmail users should be regarded as safety conscious, it's ENCRYPTED email for crying out loud; good or bad people can use it just as effectively or as poorly as unencrypted email. *Shakes head*.

What do YOU think? Can Protonmail users be trusted, is my acquaintance correct or is he a lunatic talking utter codswallop?

  • On Android 10, how to stop apps reloading if they had been minimised? They all keep reloading fresh to their opening page. Very annoying!?

I have an app open, I then need to use another app, so the first gets minimised, but when I come back to it (after minimising or closing the second app), it will redraw and I lose the page I was on. How do I disable this annoying thing on Android 10? Anyone know the correct setting?

Please help, I can't use or login to new apps with email login links because it kills the page I was on and puts the app back to it's first page. :(

  • I have two prime M42 (screw) lenses, which is a great, used <£1000 30mp+ DSLR I can use them on with inf' focus without damaging the mirror?

I'm fully aware mirrorless cameras have a shorter flange distance and no mirror to get damaged, but most mirrorless cameras are too small, too expensive (even used) and don't have many native lenses to fit them and of those that do they're hideously expensive. So, my question above stands. Do you have any great suggestions?

I'd rather not use any lens mount adaptors if at all necessary but hey, if there's real justification to, then ok, I'll consider it.

Please don't suggest mirrorless or compact alternatives, I'm really not interested. Thanks.

10pts for the best and most helpful answer but no points if your answer isn't helpful or goes against what I'm looking for. ;)

  • UK. Where can I get sliced bread where slices are 16cm square or larger? Slice thickness not important. Specific named loaves please!?

Please don't SUGGEST loaves, but list the ones you KNOW are the right size (or larger).

I have a 2-slice toastie maker and for the LIFE of me, I have yet been able to find a loaf of bread where the slices are big enough to fit it so the toastie maker's crimp-down edges can seal the toasties I'm making (a little excess/waste is to be expected). Warburton's Toastie sliced loaf 800gm (currently in orange packaging from Tesco) is far too small for my toastie maker. I want a much larger slice, do you know any specific loaves that will meet my specific requirements?

Slices need to be minimum 16cm by 16cm. Thanks!

  • DVI-D Dual Link monitor. DP/HDMI graphics card. Which cable will ENSURE 2560x1440 (native) resolution on the monitor?

DVI-D (Dual Link) monitor. DP 1.2 or HDMI 2.0 graphics card. What affordable 2mtr length cable will ENSURE *2560x1440 resolution on the monitor? *This resolution is monitor's native.

I've heard of active cables but they're prohibitively expensive (£140+). What options do I have? I'm based in the UK and don't wish to buy from overseas unless absolutely necessary.

Any accurate and helpful information welcome (if you want your 10pts) but please, no website links and "have a look on x-website" 'advice', that doesn't help. Thanks. 👍

UK only. How exactly might I hire a specific 'genre' of 1950s womens' fashion for a handful of personal portfolio photo shoots?

I'm looking at the feasibility of doing some medium format film (Hasselblad, Rolleiflex, Mamiya etc) photoshoots with models wearing elegant hired / rented-out clothes that are specifically from the 1950s.

If you know where I can hire (or even borrow, with any luck) clothes like this, please let me know! UK only. Thank you! Oh and yes, I am open to photographing women who have their own 1950s fashion attire too of course.

  • Suggestions for any SERIOUSLY characterful MF or AF portrait lenses for full frame digital?

Hi folks, I was wondering if you have any suggestions for any SERIOUSLY characterful MF or AF portrait lenses for full frame digital cameras?

TL:DR - I want a lens to fit full-frame digital for portraits that has a really unique look to it, got some ideas which lens I should buy? Budget £500.The main text, below.I know about the Helios 58mm f/2 lens with the reversed front element that gives the truly hypnotic swirly bokeh. I also know about the Canon f/1.2 lenses (MF and AF) as well as the MF Nikon f/1.2 variants. Got any other lesser-known suggestions for me? FWIW: They don't have to have insane bokeh like the Helios necessarily but still, if they have something that's really eye-catching in the results they help produce, then do please let me know. I'm likely going to be getting a used Nikon body, but if you can persuade me to go with Canon, then make your case and make it well; I don't particularly like Canon, but will get one if there's a solid enough reason to.Worth noting: I insist the lens is sharp where it matters though, I need my portraits to maintain dignity of my subjects and not look like some kind of freak show! :) Please give specific examples of actual lenses. Budget is £500,. though it'd be better if I could get more than one lens for that but I'll fork out £500 if the lens is really good. Ten glorious points on offer if you give me the greatest suggestion/s. Thanks! :)

  • Which types of microphone are best for picking up distant sounds such as wind, rain and thunder etc?

Which types (and brands/models) of microphone are best for clearly (and adeptly) picking up distant sounds such as wind, rain and thunder etc? I want to buy one which can record clear sounds of rain, wind and thunder but I don't know which are best suited to the task. Preferably USB microphones, thanks.

  • Best USB powered mic to get great, clear and defined recordings of distant sounds of nature such as rain, thunder, wind etc?

    Hi folks,

What'd be the best USB powered mic (make and model) to get well defined, clear, strong/full recordings of distant sounds of nature such as rain, thunder, wind etc? I'm asking if you know of a specific model of (USB) microphone that can be ought online for relatively little money (£20-£50 max).It has to be fitted under an eave so I get the best possible clarity while still keeping it dry and protected from rain etc.I have a cheap mic already but it's just not adept at picking up much sound at all unless any sound source is very close to the mic itself, so I want something better with much more 'pick-up' strength so I get clear, strong, well defined audio from rainfall, wind, thunder, birds etc but it must be USB powered, (no batteries or XLS connectivity!).I also have a webcam mic out there too but that's got very poor range of pick up,. very bad in the treble, awful mid,. not bad bass,.. I need something significantly better, as a great all-rounder. I'm based in the UK (so UK based shopping site suggestions please, except Amazon!). Thanks in advance!

  • Please advise. Repeatedly producing high quality fired pottery question. Possible?

I can't afford a kiln and its electricity/gas costs nor do I have room for it, plus I don't have a garden either that's suitable for building a brick-based kiln, nor could I get fuel for it. I can't afford a wheel, I don't have the free space to use one. I don't have storage/drying room or even any shelving or the space for any.

I do have the capacity to buy clay-working tools (wood/rubber ribs, trimming tools etc) and clay (in small quantities).

How can I produce, store and fire clay pots, vases, mugs, bowls, dishes, plates etc on a low budget without overly compromising build, finish and firing quality?

I ask because going to evening classes to produce clay works would be pretty slow and expensive esp' as time would be against me.

If you know how I could get repeatable and consistently high quality results on a (temporary, I hope) low budget, please advise - thank you. :)

Just so you know, I live in the UK and could always pay for better equipment if and when/if I can make enough finished items.

  • Icon in system tray on W10 refuses to hide, how do I force it to hide? Other icons do hide as per my settings, this one doesn't. Any help?

On Windows 10, the network icon in the system tray refuses to hide despite my having set it to hidden, why? How can I actually make it do what I want? Other icons hide as instructed, the network icon is the only one misbehaving. Please help! Thanks.

  • Will Microsoft ever allow Win10 users to (GUI) theme their OS's or have they said it's not possible? Default tiles really suck! Any tips?

I was just wondering 2 things:

1). Is Microsoft ever going to allow W10 users to theme their operating systems (the GUI)?

2). If GUI themes *can* safely be set, how might it be possible without downloading any dodgy files from questionable sources? There are plenty of videos of how to do it (on YouTube), but many require the user install many different files and to be perfectly honest, I don't trust the files or their sources one tiny, microscopic bit plus it's all just a bit too 'involved' and convoluted, ya know? So, with that in mind, does anyone here know for sure if MS will offer up a OS patch/update anytime soon that will finally allow Windows 10 users to properly and safely set cool n sexy new themes, (such as the Aero Glass theme from Win7)?

  • Which UK-based PC component parts sales websites has the best selection of front-panel (5.25 drive bay) fan controllers?

I'm looking for an affordable fan controller to sit in a 5.25in drive bay to control a bank of 6 fans (140mm and 120mm) so need a good selection to choose from, thanks. :)

Important: Ebay is not an option, I've looked and most items come from China.

Ebuyer, Overclockers, Aria, Scan, Eclipse or CCL Online are also not good as they either don't have enough stock, that's whether they're out of stock or they just don't sell any.

  • Hi guys n girls, I'm contemplating setting up dual boot Linux Mint & Win10 (to 2 separate 2.5in SSD drives). What are the benefits vs risks?

Please understand the question and why I've asked it like I have, I have my reasons. :)

The type of drive (in this case, a pair of 2.5in SSDs most likely and yes I know M.2 are MEANT to be faster etc) is irrelevant as are boot times or even which OS I'm choosing.

I am only interested in the pros and cons of physically dual booting with two separate storage mediums with Win10 and Linux Mint operating systems.

If it matters, I only have experience with Win7 (and earlier, not Win10 yet) and no experience with Linux Mint but I have watched a ton of videos about it in recent days. I have my Win10 and Linux Mint .iso USB boot drives ready to go.

I'm curious about installation quirks vs perks, data safety, practicality, ease-of-use (with either software considerations or hardware use), repairs/maintenance etc.

Thanks! I hope to hear about your experiences (as opposed to website links, please, no links unless super relevant).

  • Fact-finding: What was your last make & model of desktop PC motherboard, how long did you have it for & why did it need to be replaced?

I'm trying to get a widespread info stack on the reliability of modern PC motherboards, so please let me know what make & model it was and what happened to it for it to need replacing.

Please only respond to this if your board was showing distinct signs of age or if it outright failed (burnt-out PCB components etc).

My goal is to paint a picture of the most reliable brands in how long they lasted before they failed or died etc.

I currently (at the time of typing this) have an Asus P6T (vanilla) motherboard but am very worried about getting a replacement as I cannot afford to have one die on me within [at least] the next 8-10 years. In short: I need it to be bullet proof in terms of longevity.

TLDR: Have you had a motherboard that's not-long ago been replaced? Why did it need to get replaced? What make & model was it?

Let's find out what's the longest-lasting PC motherboard! :) Thanks!

Just so you know, I don't trust manufacturer data on the longevity of their boards, I mean, I doubt many people would ever believe their claims anyway, right?!

So - thanks in advance for the help! A juicy 10pts for the best answer but over-all it's everyone's responses that matter more than just one. :)

  • What's better than a Non-Disclosure Form? Is there something legally stronger that's also practical or easy to set up?

I have a cool, useful, practical and clever idea for a design for a leading businessman (no names) but want to ask him if he'd like to legitimately buy it from me - but - I cannot afford to tell him in a message/email/letter for fear of him just stealing it and finding many ways not to pay me for it.

Is us both mutually signing a non-disclosure form going to keep my idea safe from him using/taking the idea or is there something much stronger, legally speaking?

I need him to be legally duty bound NOT to legally worm his way to stealing my idea I have for him, but I do want him to buy it from me if he likes it. Any concise advice welcome, thank you.

I'm in the UK but he has offices world-wide, so who's laws are the most relevant? Thanks.

Is there something legally stronger than a non-disclosure form at all? If so, how do I get one and how do I get it to him to sign it?

Lastly, I have NO capital, no way to GET capital and absolutely no way to pay for any patents etc. I simply want to impress him enough so he pays me fair n square and takes it legally so I am not out of pocket at all; I'm fairly confident he'd stand to make a lot of money from it as its currently not in his design repertoire.

Please get in touch if you can solidly advise, thanks!

Are you a UK based art gallery specialising in abstract art? If yes, I have several pieces I'd like to get sold with your help.?

Please contact me with your website (if you have one) and we can chat to discuss my pieces? I'm not out to make it a continuous thing, (unless they prove popular), it's just a short term idea to raise some much needed funds for a photographic portfolio I desperately need to get done as I've exhausted all other avenues. Hope to hear from you soon.

  • To those of you who've sold your digital cameras, what, besides needing the money, made you sell it?

I'm just curious why I see so many second hand digital (ideally but not necessarily solely full-frame mirrorless or DLSRs) cameras are on sale.

Is it that you've got no money to use them (travel costs, model/studio hire costs etc), or is it that you can't think of what to shoot?

Did you just buy it on a whim and then just found you didn't have the time to use it?

Could it be that you have not found a source of income from taking images with it?

Ultimately, what reason/s made you decide you no longer want or need your digital cameras?

Please elaborate on those questions (if possible) and also let us know which model camera/s you had and then sold.

    Thanks!

I want one of these new doorbells (that you plug in to your mains socket). I want one which allows me to use my own sounds. Do you have one?

I'd like to install my own sounds into one but I have no idea what models allow this feature.

Any direct pointers welcomed, especially if you have one of these yourself. What model is it? How much is it? *I'm in the UK, so UK sellers please.

Also, how is the main press-the-button bit powered? Bonus points if it's USB rechargeable and not battery. :) Thanks! :)

For my convenience, please leave the make and model info.

Lastly, it'd be very helpful if item is available on Amazon UK!
