  • Is it okay to ignore my boss's text while I'm on vacation?

I work hourly (not salary) and the text is non-emergency and can probably wait a couple of days.

I took a couple of personal unpaid days, I'm not even being paid.

  • Are my car tires older than I thought?

My car was new in 2007 and that winter, I bought winter tires, which I still own and use. My understanding is tires are good for six years or so, though these seem to be doing just fine.

Anyway, only today I just found out about the date on the sidewall of the tires. Mine are 3005 and 2905 (two of the other tires don't have any dates printed on them at all... ???) and apparently this means they were manufactured in the 29th and 30th week of 2005.

Why on earth did I end up with tires two years older than my car?

Should I be pissed off at my dealer?

  • What was the darth vader mask the bicyclist was wearing?

I've never seen anything like it. Full face covered in black, four small cylinders coming out at the bottom of his face. When I overtook him (we were going in the same direction), i could hear loud inhaling and maybe valves opening and shutting. I didn't want to stare.

When I returned, I passed him again going opposite directions and it was like darth vader biking.

  • What is the URL code to hide YouTube comments?

I received a youtube link in my email yesterday but I guess I deleted it (whatever, I can't find it!) and it had a code at the end of the url, something like &video=only (I'm making that up) that let me watch the video on a full black screen, but with NO annoying and asinine comments that people always leave. It was very clever.

Any ideas? I cannot for the life of me find any articles or Googling that mentions this. Perhaps it was done through a smartphone or an ipad, but I'd like to know the code anyway. Right-clicking on a YouTube video didn't seem to offer the option either.

  • Are name brand shoes sold at Kohl's ($60) the same as $150 shoes elsewhere?

I'll put it simply: shoes I want at a New Balance store: $150. New Balance shoes at Kohl's: $50.

I can't imagine the shoes are made any differently. But I'm curious if shoes with minor defects are given to Kohl's? Or is this just the usual case of—fictional example—TJ Maxx versus Nordstrom's (shirts manufactured in the same Sri Lankan plant, but sold at two completely different prices)?

  • What would be an equivalent to the Cannondale Synapse 5 (alloy) road bike?

I can get my hands on a Synapse 6 (alloy), which has Tiagra shifters, but I really don't like the shifters. I tested Ultegras on another brand and was much happier with those... but my choices are limited. So I may have to settle for 105s.

Cannondale makes the Synapse 5 in alloy and carbon; I don't need the carbon, I'm not a racer. But I'd love to know what an equivalent of this bike may be with good or decent shifters like the 105. Feel free to mention any brand. I only know of stores that carry Cannondale, Raleigh, Scott, and I think there's a Giant store down the road.

  • Shoes hitting parts of road bike?

I'm looking at road bikes and I noticed on test rides that sometimes my normal tennis shoes will hit the front wheel of the bike.

Also, sometimes the back of my right shoe will hit the lower rear frame of the bike as well.

Are these problems because I'm wearing sneakers/tennis shoes on a road bike, and that the problems should go away once I wear clip-on shoes?

  • Meteor activity tonight?

Seeing lots of meteors coming out of Leo tonight (June 1), is there any special reason? I can't find anything online. Really tiny micro meteors and a few longer prettier, but really thin ones.

  • Gymnasts: What balance beam move is this?

The closest I can get is planche or straddle planche, but it's not, I don't think.

Spam usually goes into the spam box fine, but now someone's figured out they should break all the letters of words apart. Like, this is a subject line:

  • How do I turn off keyboard shortcuts in Yahoo Mail?

I am a little more than effin ticked off. I use option-left arrow to move my cursor back to the front of each previous word in EVERY application that I use, but in Yahoo Mail, it flips me back to the home page (the inbox) and EVERY time I do this, I lose my new composition, which is usually not being saved in Drafts. (Yahoo's Draft saving sucks compared to Gmails.) It really pisses me off. I want to turn off the keyboard shortcuts. I HAVE to use this Yahoo account because it is a company thing. Help me please or at least get me a Yahoo corporate email address I can fire off a complaint to.

  • Where can I rent a good microphone for a couple days?

Any places in Denver or south of Denver Colorado (Lakewood, Littleton) where I can rent a microphone? I need to record a piano, and I'd like a good mic, not a wireless or a lav or anything.

  • Does Daniel's Park actually have trails?

Daniel's Park is a bit of a mystery to me. Douglas County doesn't show maps, I sometimes *think* I see trails on the satellite images, etc etc. I want to go biking through there (if allowed), but I can't find evidence of the park actually being accessible beyond simply parking in the lots off of Daniels Park Rd, and maybe walking around a bit.

  • What is this camera-to-tripod head attachment called?

There is an attachment that connects to your tripod head, and it's essentially a slider that lets you slide your camera back (with ruler markings) so you can align your lens with the tripod head pivot. This way, when you rotate your camera for making panoramics, you're pivoting the camera around the center (or the front) of the lens; the body of the camera is doing the most of the motion.

But I don't know what this attachment is called, so I can't even find what it looks like. I'd like to buy one. Thanks, if anyone knows!

  • Is it damaging for oil paintings to be removed from frame, then restretched?

I was at an art gallery the other day and the guy working there explained to me that an artist's new paintings had arrived, were sent somewhere in town to be stretched onto frames, and would then return to be displayed in the gallery for sale.

Does that mean the artist stretched a blank canvas, primed and painted it, then after it dries, removes it from the frame to ship it, and then it's restretched again? How does the paint not become affected, or does it?

  • What time is SNL on tonight, MST?

I don't watch TV and I don't get TV guides or anything, and I'm the first to admit that I don't understand TV "time talk" (10/11 central, or whatever).

Can anyone tell me what time SNL is on tonight, Denver, Colorado? Thank you sooooo much!

  • Je travaillé is good enough for "I worked"?

One more question: in Pimsleur language program, they've taught me to use avoir or etre for the past tense of a verb, but suddenly they're saying "I worked" as "je" and not "j'ai".

Which is correct? Pimsleur *does* try to teach you the informalities of the language, not necessarily what is grammatically and technically correct, so I"m wondering if this is one of those situations. Still, to me "j'ai travaillé" would make more sense.

  • Etre or Avoir for "They are _____ years old"?

I'm so confused. In Pimsleurs language program, I'm hearing, "Quelle âge avez vous", but the responses in plural sound like être: Ils sont deux ans. Am I not hearing the /z/ sound in the liaison? Are they really saying "ils ont deux ans"? Can etre ever be used for talking of age-in-years?

  • Translate this haiku from Japanese?

*NO* Google translate allowed!! Also, this haiku has been translated by others, and a Google search of the characters will provide the answer. What I'm looking for is a slightly different take on the translation, so if you can give me a rough sketch of what you think each line means, I'd be grateful.

No, not for homework (I'm too old for that!). Thanks!!
