  • What removes excess wall paper paste?

Looks like they actually primed the walls in the basement before they put up the wall paper (wish the previous owners would've taken the time to do that in the rest of the house!). What's the best cleaner to use or the easiest way to remove the excess paste so I can paint? Thanks for all your advice and suggestions!

  • Why isn't my Frigidaire dishwasher working?

It's only a couple years old (don't know the model#'s). The lights come on like it's working, and if you leave it "on", it appears to "run" because the cycle indicators change from washing to drying to clean. It's completely quiet and there's no water running or anything. I tried to "re-set" it with the circuit breaker, but nothing different has happened. What happened to it and how can I fix it?

  • Help fix my washing machine ... please?

The cold water trickles in, but the hot water pours! I checked the hose into the machine, thinking there was a screen clogged with hard water deposits, but there wasn't a screen. I think it must be somewhere in the machine itself. We do have well water, but our house is on a filter. Again, no problem getting hot water into the tub, but there's barely a trickle of cold. Can't keep washing with hot water!! My machine is a Kenmore less than 5 years old. Got no $$$, so I need to fix it myself. I'm kinda handy and have basic household tools. Thanks!

  • What's probably in that space above my kitchen cabinets?

The cabinets in my kitchen don't go all the way up to the ceiling. The space above them is boxed in. What's up there? What's the easiest way to find out without doing too much damage? And if it's empty, how hard will it be to remove all that excess material and open up that space for plants and baskets and stuff like that... Thanks!

  • Catholic fasting - what are the rules?

I'm not a Catholic but I want to fast and pray for the election - that's alright, isn't it? I've got the prayers down and I have my Rosary beads to keep track/count, but what are the rules for my fast? No liquids? Just water? Water and juice? I have no Catholic friends to ask.

Our nation can use all the help it can get.

    Thanks for serious responses only.

  • Removed the carpet from my stairs...how can I round off the wood ?

...without buying a table with a router bit and all that? What other ways are there to do it without buying lots of special equipment and still achieve a professional look? If I take the planks to a lumber yard, will they do it for me?

  • What color paint looks good with brick and honey-pine paneling?

I just took the all the circa 1970's wallpaper of the basement walls and stairwell. I'm thinking of painting but I don't know which color will work best.

There's a lot of honey-pine paneling and a floor to ceiling brick fireplace. The bricks are multicolored. I'd say they have a dirty, used, rustic appearance. Some of the bricks have white on them, some are darker than others. There's no architectural interest in the design of the fireplace other than the look of the bricks and brass & glass fireplace doors. I'm not going to paint the bricks. The ceiling is texture-painted white and the exposed beams are dark oak. There's a white trim piece where the ceiling meets the walls and on one of the walls, which is paneled. It's nice wood paneling, and I don't plan to paint it, either. Carpet and furniture are neutral-tones.

The walls that I want to paint are on either side of the fireplace and one long wall on the other side of the basement, opposite the paneled wall.

    Any suggestions?

  • I was thinking about removing the carpet from the stairs. What problems will I have?

The carpet that's there is stained and it's a pain to vacuum. I was thinking about taking out the carpeting. I can see under the stairs in the basement, an the steps are pine so I assume that the other steps are pine, too, and not press-board. If that's the case, I think the only other problem I have is rounding the edges of the steps so they look right and are comfortable on bare feet; I only have the basic household tools. Have you ever removed the carpet from your stairs? What problems did you encounter? I'm thinking about staining the steps to match the doors in the house and painting the other parts (sorry, don't know what they're called). I think the look will add some style to the entryway, which is small and kind of bland right now. What do you think?

  • Is there too much pressure on girls today?

Used to be, all a girl had to do was grow up to take care of a house and be a good wife and mother. Now, not only is she supposed to be great in school, equal boys in math and science, get a degree, but she has to have a great career, earn lots of money, oh, and, if that wern't enough, she still has to take care of a house, be a good wife and mother. And if that wern't enough, she's supposed to look like a movie star while she's doing it!

  • Help!! Water from the upstairs bathroom is flowing into the kitchen through the light fixture!!?

My toddler was having a bath and I was in the bathroom trying to figure out how the window sash comes out (another story all together!). I figured out that he took a couple tumblers full of water and poured them outside the tub (even though he knows he's not supposed to!).

The water, I think, flowed down the toilet inlet pipe to the kitchen ceiling below. I turned off all the lights at the breaker, thinking it's a fire hazzard because of the water on the wires/ light fixture. WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?!

Now that the watter stopped dripping, I'm thinking I should remove the fixture and let the area dry out. If I remove the fixture and cap the wires, I can turn on the breaker so the other lights on that floor can be turned on (and finally fix the floor in the upstairs bathroom, of course!).

Is there anything else I should do?

    Thanks!

  • Detox? My friend, a Chiropractor, recommended I do a detox...?

...'cause I'm having a hard time losing weight. I took hormones a few years ago while trying to have a baby. She thinks that my liver's still holding on to those hormones and that's why I'm having so much trouble losing weight. Any ideas for detox with stuff I may already have in my home or things I can pick up at the store? I'm a stay-at-home mom (the hormone therapy worked!) and haven't got extra $$$ for her detox program. Any ideas?? Thanks!

  • Is it true that you can't lay a fridge in its side?

I have a small refrigerator - about 3 ft tall - and I'm trying to put it upstairs by myself. I'd like to lay it on the carpeted stairs and push it up. Can I do that? It'd be a lot easier for me than having to lift it up each step. Thanks.
