Can you give me your thoughts on an alternate history scenario?
If the Confederacy had (by some inconceivable and for our purposes irrelevant reason) successfully seceded from the Union, how long would slavery have lasted?
Would slavery still be legal in the Confederate states?
Would it have died out because of the changing moral, as well as technological, zeitgeist?
In what other ways would a Confederate victory have impacted the course of history?
There is no right answer, but if you're a loony who thinks it would be great if slavery were still around, please don't respond. To everyone else, I look forward to any and all flights of speculative fancy and knowledge of history you have to offer.

Why is there no philosophy section? Where is there a straight up philosophy discussion group happening? Can anyone direct me? Thanks so much for all your help.
2 AnswersOther - Society & Culture9 years agoWhat does this Oscar Wilde quote mean?
"Shallow sorrows and shallow loves live on. The loves and sorrows that are great are destroyed by their own plenitude."
It's from The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Thanks for any and all helpful responses.

1 AnswerBooks & Authors9 years agoIn "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," what is the speaker insecure about?
And what symbolizes his insecurity?
This isn't for homework, I'm just really interested in poetry.
Just kidding.
Could you maybe give me examples from the text of the poem that show what symbolizes his insecurity?
If you help me with this, I will bestow upon you all of my sincere best wishes and you will have my eternal thanks.
Seriously, I need help. Thank you very much in advance for any help you're willing to give.
2 AnswersPoetry9 years agoIs buying a refurbished Xbox 360 250gb system worth it?
Has anyone had any experience with this? Thoughts, opinions, and suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
2 AnswersXbox9 years agoCan you help me make an informed decision about buying an Xbox 360?
I don't know much about video game systems. The last console I had was a Sega Genesis. No, I'm not joking. Really, I just really, really wanna play Skyrim. And, no, I don't wanna get a PS3. Most of my friends have 360s and I wanna be able to play online with them (not Skyrim, obviously).
Anyway, what should I get? Should I buy used? I usually don't.
If I buy new, is there a reputable online retailer that has better prices than others?
Is it worth it to buy the 250gb model or can I get the 4gb system and upgrade it cheaper?
Can you upgrade hard drive space on a 360?
My GF says she would play with the Kinect. Should I get the bundle or find one used?
Basically, I wanna spend as little money as possible, but not get screwed. I think I know what I should do. I should just suck it up and let Microsoft give it to me good and hard. But I'd like the opinions of anyone with experience in these matters before I do that. Thanks in advance for any help you're willing to give.
2 AnswersXbox9 years agoCould you help me think of some "American" songs? Please read further...?
I need to make a couple CDs for this thing at work that's all about baseball. I already have every freakin baseball-themed song imaginable. I don't need any more of those. I need some songs that are "American" sounding. Think John Cougar Mellencamp, John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, etc. I'd really like some specific songs that make you think of baseball games, being in America, driving down a highway in Kansas, Fourth of July picnics, etc. Thank you very much in advance for any suggestions you're willing to give!
4 AnswersRock and Pop9 years agoCan you suggest a topic for my Intro to Anthropology class?
The guidelines are very vague. The paper can be on absolutely any topic relating to anthropology. I'm drawing a blank. And remember, this is an intro course. I'm not writing a thesis. Just a quick little research essay about five pages long citing five or six sources. I'd like to something a little obscure. I look forward to reading any and all suggestions. Thanks!
1 AnswerHigher Education (University +)9 years agoWhy can't I listen to music on myspace?
I just want to hear my friend's band. I clicked on the song and it says "flash is unavailable for playback. your flash version is 11.1.102. To proceed, try the following: refreshing the page. restarting your browser. upgrading your flash player."
I did all three of those things. I restarted my computer after installing the flash player. It still won't work and the same exact message keeps coming up. I don't know anything about computers. I just want to hear my friend's band. Thanks for any and all help you're willing to offer.

5 AnswersSoftware9 years agoCan you answer my dumb computer question?
My laptop is set to go into sleep mode (or whatever it's called) if I don't touch the mouse for like 5 minutes. After about 2 or 3 minutes of inactivity, it the screen dims. I have Windows 7. How do I change the settings so that I can walk away from my laptop for 15 minutes without it shutting off? I understand that this is an extremely simple procedure for most people. I am smart when it comes to playing the guitar, talking about the scientific method and critiquing really lame horror movies. However, I am really, really dumb when it comes to using a computer. Thank you in advance for your help and thank you for not making fun of my ignorance. Unless you 're going to make fun of my ignorance, in which case, I now put a curse upon your entire family unto the tenth generation! But, no, seriously, thanks for any help you're willing to give.
5 AnswersOther - Computers9 years agoHow should I clean cat pee out of my couch?
Long story short... cat peed on couch. Help!
10 AnswersCats9 years agoWhy did my cat, who has never done this before, just pee on the couch?
My cat is approximately four years old. She has never peed anywhere other than her box that I'm aware of. I just sat down on my couch and it has kitty pee on it. I didn't see her do it, but it is definitely pee and there is no other possible way it could have gotten wet. Why would she suddenly pee on the couch? What could be wrong with her? I'm worried. Please help!
8 AnswersCats9 years agoWhat are the best sites to legally download games?
I've used Good Old Games (gog.com) and steam. I like older games. Well, my laptop can't run new games, so I have to like older games. But I really am into old school gaming. Can anyone recommend any other sites that offer similar services? Thanks!

3 AnswersPC9 years agoCan anyone recommend good student violin for under $500?
I know I'm not going to get anything good for under $500, but it's all I can afford to spend on a violin. It's just for my own personal amusement, nothing more. I would just like to find something playable, i.e. a cheap violin that won't drive me nuts due to its cheapness. If you know what I mean. Thanks!
6 AnswersPerforming Arts9 years agoCan someone explain the evolution of sexual reproduction?
First of all, I just want to say that I am not religious or "spiritual" in any way. I'm not trying to pick a fight with anyone. I legitimately want to understand this. Additionally, if you respond to this question by saying that evolution isn't true, I will completely disregard your response. My question is based on the premise that evolution is a reliable theory. If you wanna argue about the validity of evolutionary theory, please either do it somewhere else or email me and we'll have a private discussion on the topic. I apologize for beginning my question with this little rant, but I'd really just like to hear some well-informed responses from knowledgeable people. So here's my question:
How exactly did life make the jump to sexual reproduction from methods other than sexual reproduction? I can't imagine a way in which it makes sense for there to have been a "1st female" and/or "1st male." What am I missing?
Okay, rant #2:
I really don't want the pet theories of people with no real understanding of biology. I just want the current theories, whatever they may be, that are the scientific community's generally accepted explanations of the origin of sexual reproduction.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out here. I will certainly appreciate it. And again, I'm sorry for being gruff, but every time I ask a serious question, I get bombarded by people who have no understanding of the topic I asked about. Peace.
