  • What is onaccess.exe?

My wife's PC was running slowly, so I took a look at the task manager. There was one process, called "onaccess.exe", that was taking up nearly 100% of the CPU usage. I've tried googling it, but all I get are links to sites promoting bogus "spyware detect / improve your PC / fix registry boo-boos" junk.

We have StopSign anti-virus, this is an older PC running Windows XP. Any idea what this is?

Oh, and my wife was loading in the latest update to Adobe Flash.

  • A question about copyright and fair use?

At the office where my sister works, the boss leaves TIME Magazine in the lobby. My sister saw an article that she liked and wanted to make a photocopy of it.

SHE claims that, if she makes a photocopy for herself from someone else's copy of the magazine, that's a copyright violation. She says that she either has to buy her own magazine, or go to the website and download the article from there.

*I* claim that, since the photocopy is for her own personal use, there is no copyright violation. As long as she's not selling what she copies, she is not violating any laws.

  • Is there a microphone for the Wii? Need it for "Rock Band"?

My son is playing "Rock Band" on the Wii, and wants to get a microphone. The manual states that you can use any USB mic (plugs into USB port on Wii console). Shopping around, the only USB microphones I've found are for business meetings (flat, made for center of table).

Where can I get a USB-compatible microphone that *looks* like a microphone?

    Thanks.

  • Looking for a Thai name ... Is "Jintana" male or female?

I'm writing a story where one character is a woman from Thailand. I've been trying to do some research on typical Thai names. Is "Jintana" a man's or woman's name? How about "Jintara"?

    Thanks for any help.

  • Any comic artists out there?

I have my own webcomic that I've been working on for a couple of years. It's called "Everyday Heroes" and it's hosted on WebComicsNation. It's doing fairly well, and frequently makes the top 25 most-read comics for the day.

    http://www.webcomicsnation.com/eddurd

The problem is that, since I work a regular job, plus I draw fairly slowly, I can only get one page per week done. The story is taking too long to tell; in over two years of work, only about a week of time has gone by in the comic. Considering that I want to take the main characters all the way through high school, I may not live long enough to finish the story (j/k).

Would anyone be willing to collaborate? I would provide script and a suggested page layout. If you do the b&w line work, I would add color, shading and lettering. If we build up the readership a bit more, we can start doing some merchandising as well.

I have to say that this won't be a big money-making project. But if you like to draw, and maybe make a little spare change, please contact me. Obviously I have a Yahoo email, and my username is up there by my avatar.

    Thanks!

  • How many people hate Photoshop Elements 5.0.2?

I scan my drawings, then use Photoshop to color them. At least ONCE PER SESSION, it locks up and I'm unable to save my work. I can't even close it normally, I have to bring up Task Manager to kill it. And when I do that, of course, I lose part of my work.

Has anyone else had this trouble? I'm using Windows Vista; is there a patch so that Photoshop 5.0.2 will work halfway decently, or is Adobe simply taking my money and laughing their butts off at me?

  • Lyrics to "New Ashmolean Marching Society"?

I'm a fan of old Broadway show tunes. Many years ago, I heard the soundtrack to "Where's Charley", and I can remember the melody to "The New Ashmolean Marching Society And Students' Conservatory Band", but I can't find the lyrics. I've searched online and found lots of places that sell the sheet music or CDs, but they don't have the lyrics showing.

Frank Loesser wrote some of the best lyrics ever ...

  • Problems with Photoshop Elements 5.0.2?

I'm using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0.2 with Windows Vista. Often, when I'm editing my drawings, the program will lock up on me. When I move the mouse pointer over the drop-down menus at the top, they flicker oddly, and I can't select any commands. I can't close my open files, or save what I've done from my latest command. When I try to close anything, I get the Windows "error" tone.

The only thing to do at this point is open Task Manager, and tell it to end Photoshop. I have to do this a couple of times to get it to close Photoshop, and I get the pop-up window stating "This program is not responding"

Has anyone else had this problem with Photoshop, and is there an upgrade or patch for it? Failing that, how about a big hammer?

  • Old scanner won't work with Windows Vista?

Just got a new computer, trying to hook up my old peripherals to it. I have an old Acer ScanPrisa 640U flatbed scanner with USB connector that I'm trying to get working.

According to my online search, the driver software is supplied by Benq (www.benq.com). I downloaded the zip file for the driver; however, it's for Windows XP -- they don't have a download available for Vista. I install the driver, restart my computer, and get a message that the system can't find the driver.

Is there a driver for Vista? Do I need to enter anything manually? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • True Type font that looks like alphanumeric LEDs?

For a design project, I need to find a TrueType font that looks like an alphanumeric LED display. You know, the type with several segments radiating out from the center that can display any letter or digit -- not just the 7-segment display used for numbers.

Failing that, is there a TrueType font that looks like a dot-matrix display?

I've found sites that have free TrueType fonts to download, but trying to find the one I want among more than 6000 possible fonts is a bit tricky.

    Thanks for any help.

  • What ever happened to villainsupply.com?

Way back long ago, I found a site called "eviloverlord.com" which contains a hand list of do's and don't's for those wishing to become Evil Overlords. It's still there, and can be found at http://www.eviloverlord.com/index.html...

Anyway, this site used to have a link to another site called "villainsupply.com", which was another joke website which supposedly sold all the equipment that villains need (from killer robots to nuclear weapons to your very own island lair complete with volcano).

When I checked recently, that domain name is now owned by a company that does regular web design (bleeccch).

Does anyone know what happened to the old site? I wanted to make a reference to that in my webcomic, and I was going to ask the author's permission.

    Thanks!

  • Looking for feedback on my artwork and writing.?

I've recently started publishing a comic online, and I'm looking for some constructive criticism. This is a free site, I'm not asking for money, I'm just looking for some feedback on how I can improve my artwork and writing.

It's called "Everyday Heroes"; it's about a superhero who lives in a typical suburban neighborhood and has to deal with typical domestic life in addition to saving his city from evil-doers.

Please check out http://www.webcomicsnation.com/eddurd/everydayhero... and let me know what you think. My regular email is at the bottom of most of the pages; you can leave comments on each page, or here if you like.

    Thanks!

  • How do I post just an image online?

I'm trying to get my webcomic up and running. For the logo at the top of the page, the posting site (webcomicsnation) asks me to list the online URL of the image.

What's the easiest way for me to create a web page that contains just the JPG image? Don't say Yahoo photos, because that creates a whole HTML page. I don't want to link to a whole page full of HTML; I just need a way to link to one JPG image.

  • Trying to coin a new word similar to onomatopoeia.?

(This question was actually first proposed in "The Wee Free Men" by Terry Pratchett.)

For those of you who don't know, "onomatopoeia" means a word that sounds like the sound it's describing. Examples are "bang", "thud", "ding", "crunch", "groan", etc.

Here's my question: what would be a word which describes the sound that something would make *if* it made a sound, even though it doesn't?

Examples: "gleam" -- light reflecting off of something smooth. The light doesn't make a sound, but if it did, it would be a soft steady sound such as "gleam".

"Glint" -- a sudden flash of light. You know how they sometimes add a sound effect in anime when light "glints" off the edge of a weapon.

"Sparkle" -- as you drive by a field of new snow, can't you hear the little flashes of light going "sparkle sparkle sparkle"?

OK, so if these things doing actually make a sound, they can't be onomatopoeia. So what word describes them?
