I'm a 24 year old SAHM to my beautiful 2 year old daughter, currently expecting my second kiddo- a son, in February. My husband returned last May from a year long tour in Iraq. We're just working on getting things back on track and getting back to 'normal'...
Does Mammoth Caves allow front baby carriers?
We're heading to Mammoth Caves national park this weekend, and I know the site says they don't allow baby backpacks, but does anyone know if they allow front-carriers? Is it all caves, or just specific ones? We're looking at the New Entrance Tour because the Frozen Niagara tour just seems too short for the amount of money. Any help is appreciated! (I tried calling the park, but haven't been able to get a hold of anyone.)
2 AnswersGeography1 decade agoPoll: Weight loss surgery- would you do it again?
For those who have had weight loss surgery (gastric bypass, lap band, etc.) knowing what you do now, with all the side effects and any issues since having it: Would you do it over again or are you sorry you had it?
I'm considering it and would like an honest opinion from those who have had it done.
Thanks so much.
34 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoHamsters versus Gerbils? What's right for us?
We currently have a male Chinese dwarf hamster that we're going to have to take back to the pet shop due to it's nervous, nippy behaviors. We've worked for the past week at taming it, but it's just gotten progressively more aggressive, and we can't help but to feel it's a personality trait rather than something it'll outgrow. I raised multiple Syrian hammies (short hair and teddy bear both) when I was younger and I never remember them being this nippy and hard to tame.
Although I've never had gerbils, I've been trying to research them and I'm wondering what the biggest differences is between Gerbils and Hamsters in terms of personality? We have two younger children (who aren't allowed to touch them, just look) but my husband and I want a pet we can hold and play with as well. I've read Gerbils have a much more interesting personality and should be kept in pairs, but I've read conflicting things about how much they tolerate being held. If we get gerbils, we'd definitely be investing in the fences that allow them to play on the floor so that our kids can watch them better.
We are also being given a 33 gallon hexagonal aquarium, though I can't find a screen topper to fit. Will this be an issue with either gerbils or hamsters?
Thanks for any advice!
3 AnswersRodents1 decade agoChinese Hamsters... what to expect?
We recently purchased a Chinese Hamster for our family at the recommendation of the worker at our pet store. Our children are 3 years old and a 7 months old, but we have NO plans on letting them hold/handle the hamster. I raised hamster when I was younger, and this is more of a pet for my husband and I to handle/play with, but our children to enjoy watching. The issue is, I've never had a Chinese Hamster (only the Fancy and Teddybear kinds) and I'm not entirely sure what to expect. After reading up on it, I feel like the woman recommended it to us because it's more of a 'watch, don't play with' kind of hamster, and that's not what we were really looking for... Our hammy is SUPER nervous, is impossible to catch and hates being held, and has nipped us when we do. Does this trait eventually go away with taming, or is this something that is part of Chinese hamsters personality? Should we go with a different kind of hammy? Any information is appreciated!
4 AnswersRodents1 decade agoWhy is my 7 month old still not 'mouthing' his toys?
I understand that they're different people and I shouldn't compare, but my daughter (and most babies I have known) start to 'mouth' their toys as soon as they can get their hands to their mouths. My son, however, doesn't have that natural reflex and just doesn't seem interested in putting his toys in his mouth when you give them to him. I know that the mouth is an important way babies develop and explore the world, and my fear is that he may be behind, or something bigger may be wrong. Is this indicative of anything more serious? He's 7 months old, was born at 36 weeks and spent a week in the NICU on a CPAP machine because of breathing problems. He's a little behind in other things- he didn't start rolling over until recently and he still isn't sitting up on his own yet. Any information is appreciated!
4 AnswersNewborn & Baby1 decade agoCan't remember dessert name- chocolate chips, whipped cream, cake?
I remember this dessert I had as a kid (mid 90's) that was really popular at the time. I believe it was Hershey's of some sort (at least in the name of it)... All I remember was a super-moist cake like bottom layer, a lot of whipped cream and chocolate chips and chocolate syrup. I'd really love to find the recipe so my kids and husband can try it. Anyone have any ideas what I'm talking about or any idea what the recipe might be?
Thanks so much!
3 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoChild with fever and palate pain, yet no visible trauma or sores?
My 3 year old keeps waking up in the mornings complaining that the roof of her mouth hurting. She's been running a low grade fever (between 99.5-100.5) and hasn't been acting like herself at all. There's no visible trauma or any sores on the inside of her mouth at all.
She's a little stuffy, but the doctors have disregarded our concern about it being sinus problems. She tested negative for strep, and her ears look ok. She's on Motrin every 8 hours, Tylenol every 4 to keep her fever down and make the pain in her mouth more bearable. The most they can tell is that it's a virus, but the pain in her mouth doesn't seem to be getting any better. This is the 3rd day that she's having trouble eating, only taking liquids and soft solids. She has all of her teeth, including far back molars, none seem to be loose, and there's no sign of any of them being infected (redness, swelling)...
Anyone have any idea what could be going on here?
Thanks so much!

3 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoAnyone ever relocated a historic house?
Has anyone ever had the experience of relocating an entire house? My husband and I have been looking into it as an alternative for a new house- we love the character of an old house but would like to pour our own foundation and such. We have found many houses dissembled with instructions on how to reassemble them and it seems a good option in keeping history in tact.
What problems did you run into that you didn't foresee and do you feel it was worth it once it was all done? And do you have any suggestions in general about the whole endeavor?
1 AnswerOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoSong by Miguel Bose?
My husband's serving in Iraq, and he said he heard a song today that reminded him of me, and for the life of me, I can't find the song or even the lyrics in an English translation (he heard it on the radio over there but it was in English..??) I've scoured the internet but I've come up totally short.
A clip of the song in the English version or (especially) the lyrics would be fantastic! Can anyone help me?
The song is: "Te amare" by Miguel Bose or from what I understand, "I will love you." ..? I could be wrong about that since I know VERY little spanish. From what can find, he first did a duet with a woman back in the mid 90's, and I *think* it might be on his new album too, but I'm not completely sure. ANY help is much appreciated!! Thanks so much!
1 AnswerLyrics1 decade agoLooking for a flesh colored bodysuit for a toddler?
I'm dressing my daughter up this year for Halloween as Pebbles from the Flintstones and live in a cooler climate, so I was looking for a full-bodysuit that's flesh colored to put under her outfit so that she's not cold. I just can't seem to find any. I'd be happy with a long-sleeved body suit that was flesh colored. I'm sure I can find a pair of tights or pants that would work for the bottoms- but I really just need something to cover up her belly and arms. If anyone knows where I can find one, or has any ideas of what I could do, I'd appreciate it! She's wearing as size 12-18 months right now.
Thanks!!
6 AnswersToddler & Preschooler1 decade agoUsed Pacifica or New Town and Country?
We're looking into getting a new, bigger car- we have one daughter and will be (sooner then later) trying for another little one. I have a 2004 Honda Civic right now (won't be trading it in.) I love the gas milage, but I know no SUV or van will be nearly that good- but it is still a consideration. We drive a LOT.
We love Chryslers and are planning on getting one. But for our price range, we are looking into a new Town and Country or a used Pacifica (about 1-2 years old, as low milage as we can find it.) I love the T&C because of the dual sliding doors, but I've always adored the Pacifica for it's style and 3 row seating without being massively huge.
Has anyone had experience with either of these cars? Was it good or bad? And would you recomend it to us to buy?
Serious answers only please!
Thanks!
8 AnswersChrysler1 decade agoLand lord suing over last month rent...?
We asked for a 6 month lease- They told us flatout that they did not offer anything but 12 month leases. While living there, we found out that more then a few residents had 6 month leases(some who had moved in before us and some after)We believe we were not offered that because we were young, not married and expecting our first child(these are private land lords who's main work is preaching)We knew we were being discriminated against.
We had to break our lease at 6 months(boyfriend got a job in a different city 2 hours away)They let us out of the lease and initially told us we could have our deposit back. They had our apartment rented out already and told us to be out 5 days before the date we told them we would. So we left and kept trying to contact them about getting the deposit back. Two months passed and they never cashed the check from the last months rent, but I had to close my account- there were none of those banks here.So we assumed the deposit was covering the last months rent
9 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoDifference between a 'bad' or bounced check and a 'cancelled' check..?
We're being charged by our old land lords for writing a 'bad' check. Supposedly, if I don't pay them in 10 days, they'll file criminal charges against me for it (the check was out of my account, not my husbands.) The thing is, the money was in there for 2 months. They didn't cash the check. We HAD to close that account and we were under the impression that they were going to use our deposit for the last month's rent. So we went ahead and closed our account with that bank (there aren't any of those chains where we now live.) So they're pressing charges against me. We were told by a lawyer friend that it's considered a 'cancelled' check and not a 'bounced' check because the account was closed. How does all of that work? They can't press charges against me for a cancelled check? I know they could say we didn't pay the last months rent, but that's not the same thing as a criminal charge for a bad check, right? I just need some clarification. Thanks!
1 AnswerOther - Business & Finance1 decade agoLaws for renters on satellite/cable choices?
I thought there was some type of federal law that required apartment complexes or renters to allow people the choice of their television providers?
I live in a relatively large apartment complex. They offer cable through themselves (from Time Warner) for 40$ a month for BASIC cable. (only 50 channels) Everyone around us seems to have Directv or some type of satelite provider, because of this. Well, when we went to have ours installed, the guy couldn't do it because the apartment complex has 'rules' against where the dish can go, and since our balcony (the only place they allow them) faces away from the signal, we can't get it. We ended up taping into an upstairs neighbor's dish who managed to get a signal, but they have since moved and the complex took the dish down.
What are my rights as a renter? What about the fair housing act? Isn't it a monopoly if they won't allow me to go through Time Warner unless it's through them??
Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
7 AnswersLaw & Ethics1 decade agoBorn with a naturally 'split' tongue?
I can't seem to find any information about this condition online. I'm not sure if it's that rare, or if I'm just not searching for the right thing.
My husband and daughter both have a 'split' tongue. It's not as bad as you see when people get them done by cutting them, but they can both move each side indepedently. It's odd to me because you never really think of tongue's as being genetic, but my husband's had his since birth, and my daughter was born 10 months ago with the same thing. It's a split on the tip of the tongue that goes about 5mm back into their tongues.
Does anyone else have this, or know where I can find information regarding it? I find it very interesting and wonder too the likelyhood of our future children having it as well (it prevented me from breastfeeding my daughter since she couldn't latch on properly.) Serious answers only please!
Thanks!
2 AnswersDental1 decade agoLife of a military wife...?
My husband leaves for training tomorrow, and then, in 2 months, he's off to Iraq for a year. We have a 10 month old daughter, and she and I are going to be living 2 hours from his family and mine.
My question is to anyone with experience of deployments- I know I have a pretty good idea of what to expect, but what are some of the things you went through that you weren't expecting? Is there anything you would have done or not done (ie- involved yourself more in the FRG, or had more military friends?) My husband is Army Reserve, so it isn't like we live a military lifestyle normally. I don't really live near a base, and his unit is located 2 hours from us as well, so I don't have a lot of support from other military wives.
Also- when your husband got back, was he different? I know a lot of guys are coming back with PTSD, but how bad or good has your own experience been with it all?
Thank you SO much in advance!
7 AnswersMilitary1 decade agoHow can I approach an old friend I haven't talked to in a few years?
I had a great friend when I was younger, and we have since lost touch. I'm not sure why she and I stopped talking. She married a man I used to date, and I'm not sure if it's because she was uncomfortable with that situation, or if it was something I did? I still see her husband on occasion where he works and I always ask about her, but he always makes it seem like she has no want to speak to me again. I know I can't force a friendship with her if she doesn't want one, but she was the best friend I've probably ever had and I miss just talking to her and knowing how her life is. I miss her now more then ever because none of my other friends ever quite understood me as well as she did.
What do you all think the best way to contact her is? Do you think it's even worth it, or is she inadvertantly trying to tell me she doesn't want a friendship with me? Any advice is appreciated!
9 AnswersFriends1 decade agoWhat's the mildest brand of salsa?
My father is in his 60's and loves salsa but can't stand the acid reflux from those salsa's listed as 'mild'... Are there any that are made 'extra mild' or has anyone tried any that has little spice to it? I know it sounds crazy, since salsa is *supposed* to have a kick to it, but he enjoys it so much, I'd like to find him something that he can eat without paying for it later.

6 AnswersOther - Food & Drink1 decade agoHow can I keep my baby bibs from molding?
I know that sounds like a silly question, but I only do the baby's laundry about once a week, and by the time the bibs from earlier in the week are washed, they've already got what looks to be mold growing on them..? I end up having to throw them away, but I wasn't sure if there was a way to keep that from happening? I figured submerging them in water would only make the mold problem worse. Has anyone else ever had this problem and what did you do to help solve it? Serious answers only please!
