  • Was it OK to moist down our cat with cool water in this heat?

We had 85 F degree heat today and our cat was suffering with it. So I took a cloth with cool water to cool it. My girlfriend said "No! Don't do it. You know she hates water."

I did it anyway and sure enough, the cat meowed at me and ran and started licking off the water as if were poison. I still think I did the right thing. I think the two of them are cry-babies. Anyway who was right? I plan to do it again if it looks like its too hot.

  • Why does Nikon D40 zoom lens say 18-55mm (i.e. 27-82.5mm)?

I didn't know there was an equivalence issue in Nikon D-SLR that compact digital cameras have. (ie 5mm in compact cameras equals 28mm in 35mm film.)

I thought all Nikon lens are interchangeable with their 35mm bodies so if a 28mm lens on the 35mm film camera, it would be a 28mm on their digital line. Why is there a size difference if DSLR sensors are 35mm sized? If there is a size difference, does it shift angles of view on all Nikon lens?

  • What do you think of Yahoo!'s new 'boss' search technology?

Your search results are determined by your political beliefs. If you are a Republican the results will give you one result, if you are a Democrat you get a different result.

  • Do Protons represent most of the matter in the Universe?

Since most of the known matter in the universe is hydrogen, would that make protons most of the mass in the universe.

And do electrons represent most of the energy of the Universe? Even though electrons carry a little mass they do seem to act like energy don't they?

  • Where are the Hoover Dam sized projects in this stimulus package?

This is the most money spent in one package at one time in many of history,.So where are the historic construction projects that we still remember from the Great Depression such as the Hoover Dam and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) that brought electricity to rural America?

Our major bridges in Cleveland here that still handle much of our truck traffic were built in the Great Depression. I was hoping that if this was going to equal the spending of the Depression it would have some lasting constructions that would be remembered generations from now. Instead, too much of it seems to be social programs and a few tax cuts.

  • Why doesn't decreasing the weight of a car increase the gas mileage proportionately?

For example, the curb weight of a Chevy Cobalt is almost 3,000 lbs with highway mileage of 35 mpg. So with the Smart Micro Car having a curb weight of half that, you would think its mileage would be twice that. But its MPG highway is only 41 MPG. The same with the tiny minicooper (weight 2,5000 lbs 37 mpg) What causes that? Is it some inherent weakness of internal combustion engines? Does just turning on all gas engines burn a lot of fuel? Or is it something else?

  • Why are SLR cameras (even digital ones) still being made?

I used to own an 35mm SLR years ago and loved it. It was my main method of doing photography for many years. When the first generation of digital cameras came out, I ignored them tor there horrid resolution and lack of features. However, the models of the last couple of years caused me to put away the SLR. When my friend bought a Nikon D60 he let me play with it and I was aghast. I thought is was too heavy. I thought the zoom lens was ridiculous with its lack of range and weight. I missed auto zoom and shocked when I saw even focus needed adjustment. So since lcd screens give users the power only SLRs once had, why bother? I can only see a camera like the Nikon SLR for professionals and even them might be able to use top of the line non-SLRs for their work. So what am I missing in my evaluation?

  • Why don't the richest people such as Bill Gates, etc. offer GM, Ford and Chrysler the loans?

I was wondering why GM Ford and Chrysler have to go to the U.S. Government for the loans. You would think a consortium of Buffet, Gates, etc. may be a better choice to help the auto industry.

  • Don't the Obama rallies remind you of George McGovern's rallies?

When I was in college in 72, the George McGovern rallies were enthusiastic, had many tens of thousands of young people (includiing myself) had everything going for him, yet in the end lost to Nixon.

I think think the Obama rallies are like that where people with nothing to do in the day and like the media hype, but in the end the silent majority who quietly vote may end up switching to McCain. Now, including myself since Obama is further Left then McGovern.

  • Must we be our 'Brothers Keeper' Except for Obama?

Obama has saying that we must be our brothers keeper in his primary ads. Yet he doesn't help his own relatives living in poverty in this country.

What's up with that? 'Brothers keeper' means family helping family, Not federal government taking it from us to build welfare or section 8 project on your block.

  • Doesn't this show the 'gimme' attitude of Obama supporters?

This woman on Yahoo questions asks "What wrong with giving money to the poor?" She uses herself as an example, only she makes over $35,000 with child support and food stamps. Oh and she says "and i need to pay $1250 a month for rent." Well, read her question yourself and you will get the idea.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=200810...

To me, this is proof of the gimme attitude of the obama supporters. If that attitude wins, we will end up like the people in Cuba or Zimbabwe because no one would want to work hard to support someone else. I sure don't and I'm sure my taxes already go to pay peoples food stamps that I don't get to have.

  • Where are the rich corporations Obama wants to tax? ?

Banking and real estate are hurting. Auto manufacturing, auto selling, large restaurant chains, newspapers and mass retailers are hurting. Who are these rich corporations Obama keeps talking about? I can't find them in this economy. Even Yahoo and ebay are hurting.

  • Where can a find a Super Wide or Ultra-Wide Wide screen TV?

Do they sell 'wider' screen TVs, wider than 16:9?

On my wide screen TV, I see the the black bars signifying a super wide aspect ratio even on network broadcasts, It's even noticeable on sports games. It's also noticeable on some DVDs filmed in SuperScope or an ultra-wide aspect ratio, such as the Star Wars movies. It would be nice for our TVs to be that wide. It would feel like we were really at a movie theatre if they had super wide TVs. So are TV manufacturers planning on making them or do they already sell them?

  • Was it almost a disaster at LHC on 9/18/08? Can ton of helium that leaked their cause atomic fusion explosion?

They lost over a ton of helium in super-cold state during operations.

I know it diffused out by now. But when it happened could there have been a small nuclear fusion explosion from the high energies hitting the helium especially since there was over a ton of helium lost?

  • Could physicists create the chemical sciences with their physics?

Could physicists predict the nature of all the elements just by knowing the electrons and nucleons of the elements? If so, how is this possible? How does the atomic nature of elements create our everyday world? Is there a way to jump from atomic theory to chemistry without the 200 years of chemical knowledge? Could physics create the chemical sciences from physics?

  • Can physicists predict chemical and physical nature of elements with only atomic numbers?

Suppose Physicists had no knowledge of the elements but knew the atomic structure of the atoms. Would they be to predict their physical and chemical nature based on that? Example: Element X has 1 electron and 1 nucleon. Would they know it would be an explosive gas. Again, the physicists have never heard of this element. Then up the atomic chart. How far up would they be able to go with no knowledge of chemical history? i e they'd be working blind. Could they predict the nature of all the elements just by electrons and nucleons? If so, how is this possible? How does the atomic natures of elements create our everyday world? Is there a way to jump from atomic theory to chemistry without the 200 years of chemical knowledge? Could physics create the chemical sciences from physics?

  • What happened to the missing atoms in the Bose-Einstein Experiment?

In 2000, scientists experimenting with a Bose-Einstein condensate of Rubidium-85 uncovered a hitherto unknown property of the condensates. As they shrunk the condensate by strengthening the the magnetic field surrounding it, the condensate suddenly reverted back to attraction, imploded and shrank beyond detection, and then exploded, blowing off about two-thirds of its 10,000 or so atoms. About half of the atoms in the condensate seemed to have disappeared from the experiment altogether, not being seen either in the cold remnant or the expanding gas cloud. Carl Wieman explained that under current atomic theory this characteristic of Bose–Einstein condensate could not be explained because the energy state of an atom near absolute zero should not be enough to cause an implosion. Here's the kicker:

Nobel laureate Dr. Eric A. Cornell, does not rule out the possibility of stable micro black hole creation after an unexpected bosenova implosion at the university of Colorado. According to other reports, close to half the atoms could not be accounted for, suggesting that if a micro black hole was the explanation for the missing atoms, then the micro black hole was a STABLE micro black hole AND the cold remnant was far large than could be explained. Dr. Cornell does not have a good explanation for what happened, and he thinks a stable micro black hole is a less likely explanation, but he does not reasonably rule this possibility out, that a stable micro black hole might have been created." I would hope its just a fusion reaction and not a black hole, but its why I'm asking the question. Does anyone really know what happened? Has the results been replicated?

These are the types of condensates being experimented with at both Brookhaven and soon at CERN (LHC) Shouldn't they go slow until more firm answers are found?
