  • Our new cat seems to have 2 owners. What should we no next?

A persian cat was wandering around our property for two months before we decided she was ours. She was pregnant and then suddenly she was not pregnant and her teats were dried up. We supposed her kittens were born and died. She was famished and we finally decided to start feeding her. Due to allergies, she has remained an outside cat for the last month that we have owned her. We chose not to comb her or wash her right away. She had cuts that we wanted to heal before we messed with her fur. She did not even want to wear a collar, so we kept it off her. She stayed on our covered deck and was fairly warm, so we did not want to bother her too much. Our plan was to get her shots and spaying done in March. Well, she went on her nightly walk and did not come back the next morning. She came back the morning after with a flea collar on. The vet told us that flea collars were not as good as the drops and so we took the flea collar off. I went ahead and combed her fur and washed and dried her. Then I put her regular collar on and attached a note saying nicely that we did not want to double her up on pet care and for them to please call us so that we could talk about her care. Then we let her roam again last night. She came back this morning with no collar and yet they haven't called. I tried to get some more mats from her fur, but she cried; she is still tender. I sent her out with another note tied to a ribbon. What would you do next?

  • Care of rabbit doe and kits?

I am very afraid that I acted hastily or did something wrong in touching the kits to count them last night. I woke up Thursday morning to a doe with a pile of fur in her cage. I knew this was a good sign of impending birth, but I also "knew" she had never been with a male. The male, Benny, is in a cage separate from the doe, Athena. Well, it turns out the kids let them "play" together about a month ago. ;) Anyway, I checked her that night and noticed movement in the nest. I picked up each kit to check them. I gave her a box, but she seems to sleep beside it and not in with the kits. I suppose this is normal and the five little ones did seem all groomed and healthy. There was no sign of blood when I found them. I wonder if they were born Wednesday night instead of Thursday during the day. I hear the five kits squeal from time to time, and Athena checks them often. Athena's personality has certainly changed. She is much calmer and nicer; she never used to let me touch her, except for nose rubs. Now she seems to appreciate an occassional pet on the back. Has kindling made her gentler? Also, I never see her nurse, yet the kits look healthy. She stays away from them, but does peek in often. I just read this is normal, but it is unnerving to my 14 yo son, who owns her. So what do we do now? We gave her Alfalfa hay today instead of the Timothy hay we have been feeding her for the last six months (she is about one year old). I read that is fattier hay. Good move? She has regular rabbit pellets with some treats mixed into it. She also has a seed and honey treat hangin on the cage. It is a large cage. She is litter-box trained. We use regular cat litter for the bathroom box and a paper-type litter for comfort in the rest of the cage. The kitsare in a large sho box with her two knit place mats that she loves and all her fur piled on them. She has the kits on one placemat and covers them with the other. Our house is naturally very cold. Is there any more nformation I can give to help you better help us? Please, treat us like the novices that we are and give us all the information you possibly can from the food she needs to behavior I should expect. Web searching is one thing. Personal advice from experience breeders is what we really want. Thank you!

  • Transplanting Peonies?

They already have short stalks, but no blooms, of cource. They were in a line where a fence once stood. Then a tree fell in that spot. Now that the fence and tree are removed, what is left of the peonies are in the way of where the children run and play. I fear that kids' feet will be the end of what survived all the other issues. What I would really love to do is get them out of there and put them in the front yard (south side of house) still in the sun but more out of the way. Will they transplant? Will they bloom this year (around June) if they are transferred this week?

  • Homebirth question again?

Why is it that when someone asks a question about something like homebirth, that everyone who knows nothing about homebirth has to answer her and make her afraid to post the question anymore? This is cruel! I tried to answer her question after people said how dangerous it was (noticed they could not site ANY statitics) and when I went to post it, the question was already removed. More sensitivity was in order. She asked who had had a home birth and those who had never had one had to be cruel and jump in with unfounded opinions. Sooooo, I will ask it. Who else has had home births and is willing to tell. Please, I am not asking for a poll of opinions about homebirth: only true experiences.

  • Did anyone pick a collection of names and wait until after the baby was born?

We chose two sets of first and middle names for a boy and two sets of first and middle names for a girl. Then we waited until after our babies were born. They have neat stories to tell and we got to pick names that fit how they looked at birth. For example, our son came out with shocking bright red hair and a quirky smile. He looked as if he was ready to joke and play around from the day he was born. He instantly seemed to fit better with Timothy Caleb than Nathaniel Robert. He now loves his name and its meaning best, too. Did anyone else do something like that?

  • I need healthy breakfast ideas that can be made ahead of time and/or take very little time.?

I do not own a microwave for health reasons. I also try to avoid pork products and fish. We love raw food but don't mind precooking and freezing meals or heating them in the oven or on the stove. I am looking for recipes that can be prepared the night before or several nights before, stored in the fridge until they are to be used and be heated up quickly. Freezer-stored breakfast meals would be great, too. However, I would still love to hear from you if you have a recipe that takes very little time to prepare fresh in the morning or can be fixed qyuickly by teenagers (I homeschool five children ages 4-15). The best vote goes to the tastiest and healthiest recipe(s) which take the least amount of our mornings to prepare. Thank you.

  • Raising a rabbit?

My 13 yo son got a regular female rabbit (looks exactly like a wild rabbit right down to the markings) for Christmas. We waited a long time until we felt he was responsible enough to care for this pet. The rabbit was about 4 months old when we got it. Even though our son has tried to handle this rabbit daily, it is extremely afraid to be picked up or handled at all. The cage is medium in size and cleaned weekly. Alfafa, pellets, and a food asortment for rabbits is fed daily. The rabbit sqeals when we touch its side or try to curl our fingers under it. It was bought from a pet store but we do not know the breeder or how she handled her rabbits. We have trusted the small-town pet store owner for quite a few years, though. We have purchased rats, fish and other small creatures from him and his pets are always in fine condition. Does anyone have any advice for helping this rabbit to become friendly?

  • Dear Homeschoolers, why are taking sides against each other?

A recently asked question regarding what qualifies as "true" homeschooling leads me to ask this piercing question. Should we spend even an ounce of energy trying to say one person is not officially homeschooling simply because of the materials or support they use? Is the parent using Calvert's teacher advisors not still at home making sure that the child does the work and ensuring that the papers get mailed on time? Should the parent using a private computer program be associated with those "evil" public schoolers? Are the parents who check all the catalogs for materials or who let the child decide the direction of his education better than the ones who turn on the computer or the sattelite or the VCR to make sure that the child is doing the right assignments from the chosen curriculum? Am I the only one who sees this as homeschool snobbery? As a homeschool support group leader, I think all hsers ought to be supporting ALL methods of bringing children back home!
