What is the origin of the term "Nazareth Market" or "Nazareth Auction"?
It is British slang for a dodgy or underground market/auction where goods of dubious origin are flogged. On an episode of New Tricks they had a case where a ring of thieves were holding art auctions at night in a lockup where unscrupulous dealers would bid on stolen art objects they could then sell to private clients at a significant mark up. An informant uses the term "Nazareth auction" and even the seasoned detectives had never heard the term. On another UK police procedural the term "Nazareth market" was used in a similar context.
I am wondering what the origin of this term is and whether it perhaps goes back to thieves' cant.
4 AnswersWords & Wordplay8 years agoWhat are the lyrics of the song Lump by Mutiny?
The song was used in the 1980 movie Cruising. It is by Mutiny, the band started by Jerome Brailey when he left Parliament-Funkadelic (P-Funk) after a dispute with George Clinton. It sounds like it actually has George Clinton on it, but I am not sure.
I cannot seem to find the lyrics anywhere on the internet. I'd like both the spoken part and the sung refrain.
The refrain sounds like:
Love love can you move the rug?
Love can you cut the ball?
2 AnswersLyrics9 years agoWhen did Fabric become "fabrication"?
I've watched some coverage of fashion shows and I've noticed that people refer to the fabric used in a given piece as "fabrication" instead of "fabric." Is there any real distinction between the two or is this some kind of highfalutin' new way of sounding more sophisticated?
5 AnswersWords & Wordplay9 years agoWhat is this rude (drinking?) song I heard crossing the Channel in 1986?
When I was 12 my Aunt took me to London and Paris for 1 week each (I am American.) On the boat across the channel there was a group of drunken young Englishmen who got in the middle of the deck and performed a rude song for everyone who was standing there. I have never heard or seen reference to this song since and now that there's an internet I can't understand why I can't find it.
Each verse started with the main bloke acting out being a different sportsman (golfer, billiards player, jockey, etc.) The crowd would call out, "Hey golfer!" and ask him about himself. Then he would sing a rude verse like this:
"Down the fairway, down the fairway, where's me f&ckin' balls?" (sung twice.)
Then he would be a jockey and they would say, "Hey jockey....?" And he would sing the answer:
"(Something, something), wotta lovely ride!" (accompanied by pelvic thrusts.)
Then it was, "Hey billiards player" and he sang something like:
"In the pocket, in the pocket...something something balls"
Any idea what this was?

9 AnswersCurrent Events10 years agoI have lost a lot of weight but my cholesterol has gone up. Why?
I had my cholesterol checked and other blood tests seven months ago. Since then I have lost over 70 pounds and I just had my cholesterol rechecked and it has gone up two points. If this was because the good (HDL) cholesterol had gone up that would be okay but it was the bad (LDL.) My triglycerides have dropped dramatically. But why did the LDL go up? I have been eating a healthy diet and exercising, unlike before when I was overweight. It is really annoying me.
2 AnswersDiet & Fitness1 decade agoHow is a lanai not a screened porch?
I am trying to figure out what exactly the word lanai means that is different from a screened porch. I've read the answer that "a lanai is a porch with a roof." That makes no sense because all porches have roofs. I've also heard that a lanai is "a porch with a screen." Same thing, many/most porches have screens and that does not make them lanais. Is it just a matter of geography? I've heard lanai used in Hawaii and Florida. Is there actually any physical difference between a screened porch and a lanai or is it just a geographical distinction?
1 AnswerOther - Home & Garden1 decade agoWhat's the best place to sell a used refrigerator, bathtub, stove and dishwasher?
I am buying a condo with 11 year old appliances and bathtub and I want to upgrade it with stainless steel fridge, stove and dishwasher plus put in a soaker tub. I would like to see if I can sell the existing appliances and tub to offset the cost of buying new ones. It is a nice set of midpriced black appliances. Does anyone have suggestions for the best place to advertise and sell these where I can get as much as possible?

2 AnswersRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoSunken (Roman) tubs a liability in a rental house?
I am looking at houses to buy and rent out for income and there is one I really really like, but I am worried because both bathrooms have these deep sunken tubs that go down into the floor about a foot. I can easily imagine someone falling into them. I am thinking it is not worth the liability. Does anyone know how to deal with this? Is it expensive to convert them to above ground tubs?
1 AnswerRenting & Real Estate1 decade agoIf you're approved for one $400,000 mortgage will the bank give you 4 $100,000 mortgages for four properties?
I am thinking instead of buying one house and getting the $400,000 mortgage I was offered that I would like to buy four houses each with a mortgage of $100,000 and rent them out for the income. Will the bank be less likely to offer this? I want to know before I call them. Thank you!

I had an operation as a small child in 1973 and I remember them using ether on me as the anesthetic. My friend said that is impossible as the use of ether had been discontinued many years earlier. Who is right?

They do not bear any relation in style or artistic philosophy to Piet Mondrian and the owners are called Morgan, not Mondrian. None of the designers who designed each of the Mondrian locations is named Mondrian. And nowhere on their website does it explain the name. Does anyone know?
2 AnswersLos Angeles1 decade ago1970s song with lyrics "steal a chicken from the rich man's yard"?
Hi, back in college 20 years ago I heard this song which I know was from the early to mid 1970s and I thought it was by Little Feat, but now I can't find it.
The chorus has the line "for a day" and one verse has something like "take a chicken from the rich folks' yard".
Chorus:
For a day, for a day
Gonna something something something?
for a day

2 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhere can I hear the theme song of the 1967 Casino Royale with vocals?
I bought the 1967 soundtrack and I was so disappointed when the theme song on both tracks 1 and 13 was entirely instrumental. What happened to the vocals? Does anyone know if the song is available somewhere with the vocals?
2 AnswersOther - Music1 decade agoIn the 1967 Casino Royale who sang the vocals on the theme song?
I know Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass played this track, but who actually sang the vocals? Herb Alpert almost never sang (the big exception was when he recorded "This Guy's In Love With You.) So it makes me think it wasn't Alpert singing that theme. It doesn't say on the soundtrack listing online and I don't have a copy of the soundtrack with me so I can't look on there. Also, the voice on it sounds British. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

4 AnswersLanguages1 decade agoWhat is involved in a condo conversion and what are the costs?
If I purchased a 3 family rental building in Jersey City, New Jersey, for example, what would be the steps to converting these to 3 condos and selling them? What sort of professionals would be involved? How long does this take? How much does this cost? What are some of the uncertainties, i.e., circumstances that could prevent me from being allowed to do a condo conversion? Can you point me to a website where I can learn more? Thanks.
