  • Electric charges on a semi circle (physics with calc)?

A line of positive charge is formed into a semicircle of radius R = 60.0 cm, as shown in the figure below. The charge per unit length along the semicircle is described by the expression λ = λ0 cos(θ). The total charge on the semicircle is 16.0 µC.

Calculate the total force on a charge of 5.00 µC placed at the center of curvature.

A picture of the situation is a semi circle with a dot at the origin (the semi circle is above the x-axis, not below). There is a radius R and there is an angle Theta that, if R were on the right side of the y-axis, would be on the left side of R.

  • Can you multiply or divide infinities to get a finite number?

If you take infinity and divide it by infinity, it would seem possible to get a finite number, since the infinities would cancel out. However, 1/infinity is equal to zero, so it would be the same thing as infinity times zero, and this would equate to taking an infinite number of zero's and adding them together. How can this produce a finite number? But is 1/infinity really zero? For it to be zero, that would mean that infinity has been reached, which would mean there was a limit to infinity, but that seems contradictory.

But at the same time, if you take an infinity and divide it into an infinite number of groups, shouldn't there be 1 (or some other finite number) in each group? If there was nothing in each group, then infinity would essentially be equal to nothing. It almost seems as if zero and infinity are the same, and yet not.

The nature of infinity is quite perplexing. What do you guys think?

  • Why did the soldiers Crown Jesus with thorns?

It doesn't seem like a normal policy for executing criminals.

Is there any particular symbolism in this? True, he was called King of the Jews, and the purpose of the crown was to mock this, but was there any particular reason why a crown of thorns was used? It would seem like it would take some effort and thought to make a crown like that. What exactly did it symbolize, or mean?

  • Is there such a thing as objective happiness?

Now by this, I mean a complete happiness that can be achieved in a general sense. Do people strive to attain an objective happiness by means of their own understanding of the world? Can it be compared to reality, where we try to base our views on what is real and true as much as we are capable of through our own, perhaps incomplete reasoning? Likewise for happiness, do we all strive to obtain that happiness as closely as possible, according to our own understanding, or is it all just subjective, relative to the person?

  • What do you call it when one thing consumes another, and then that thing is consumed by something else?

What is the technical term for that? It goes on and on for almost infinity, like a fish that eats a fish, and then is eaten by a bigger fish, and then that is eaten by an even bigger fish.

  • What do you think of these 5 proofs for the existence of God?

1 - FIRST MOVER: Some things are in motion, anything moved is moved by another, and there can't be an infinite series of movers. So there must be a first mover (a mover that isn't itself moved by another). This is God.

2 - FIRST CAUSE: Some things are caused, anything caused is caused by another, and there can't be an infinite series of causes. So there must be a first cause (a cause that isn't itself caused by another). This is God.

3 - NECESSARY BEING: Every contingent being at some time fails to exist. So if everything were contingent, then at some time there would have been nothing -- and so there would be nothing now -- which is clearly false. So not everything is contingent. So there is a necessary being. This is God.

4 - GREATEST BEING: Some things are greater than others. Whatever is great to any degree gets its greatness from that which is the greatest. So there is a greatest being, which is the source of all greatness. This is God.

5 - INTELLIGENT DESIGNER: Many things in the world that lack intelligence act for an end. Whatever acts for an end must be directed by an intelligent being. So the world must have an intelligent designer. This is God.
