Confused about intro to book A PRAYER for OWEN MEANY?
I have started reading the introduction and it seems to give away a lot of the plot. Are readers definitely supposed to read the introduction before we read the rest of the book?
1 AnswerBooks & Authors9 months agoQuestion for Human Resources person (or anyone)?
Older person trying to avoid age discrimination in applying for jobs.
On my resume, I'm leaving off the date of my college degree. I have listed the start and end dates of my recent jobs. However, some of my most relevant work goes WAY back. I would rather not list those dates - but if I don't, and I've listed all other employment dates, that may look suspicious.
Do you recommend I list all dates? Why / Why not?
If I leave some dates off, do I mention why? (But I feel that draws even more attention to my age.)
In person I look much younger.
Thanks.
4 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment12 months agoMost women melt getting flowers. What could a woman get a man that might have the same effect?
For Valentine's Day (and other occasions) I usually DO things (to/for/with him) he likes - and I will still do that - but I want to also GET him something. He used to like beer, so instead of a bouquet of flowers I got him a "bouquet" of assorted beers. On various other occasions I got him things related to hobbies or teams he likes. But is there some general thing or category of thing that means love to a man the way flowers mean love to a woman?
4 AnswersSingles & Dating1 year agoAn interesting, upbeat, inspirational BIOGRAPHY of a MUSICIAN?
For an older teenage guitarist and keyboardist who gets incredible pleasure from hearing and composing music - mostly heavy metal, some classical. Is there a good true story out there about a musician who may have had hard times but is not currently on drugs or dead?
2 AnswersRock and Pop1 year agoWhat can I say to a Vietnam Vet or Korean War vet to make them feel they accomplished something?
You could say to a WW II vet, "If not for you, Hitler might have ruled the world."
The soldiers who went to Vietnam and Korea did not accomplish anything like that, but that was not their fault: it was the fault of our government who had no clear cause and who were not committed to winning. Still, I want them to feel proud of what they did and to feel that their sacrifices did change our world for the better in some ways.
I have thought of some things but hope for more. Please add your thoughts!

4 AnswersYahoo Answers2 years agoOlympian punished by Hitler?
After offering advice and friendship to African-American Jesse Owens during the Berlin Olympics, Caucasian Aryan Carl "Luz" Long died fighting for the Germans at age 30. I can t find the answers to these questions:
Did he want to join the Wehrmacht or was he forced?
Is there any evidence that he was purposely given a dangerous assignment as punishment?
How was he treated between the 1936 Games and his death?
3 AnswersHistory3 years agoThinner and stronger than plywood?
Mold has decayed areas of floor so we want to clear the mold and then reinforce the floor with something thin and strong.
The first thing that comes to mind is plywood, but is there anything (wood or metal or anything) thinner and stronger that would do a great job? (Least expensive would also be a bonus!)
Thanks.
7 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)3 years agoAre architects becoming obsolete?
My son - a senior in high school - is trying to decide between being an architect and one other field. He appreciates good architecture when he sees it, enjoys imagining and sketching buildings of all sorts, and has enjoyed the two computer drafting classes he has taken at a community college.
My sister just advised me that, with designing houses by computer so easy and available to anyone, and with construction workers performing the technical aspects that architects used to do, architecture is a dying field and he should just concentrate on the other possibility.
This was the first I d heard of this, but thinking about it, what my sister said does make sense. What do you architects out there know about this? And you people who designed homes within the last 10 years or so ...did you do it yourself or did you hire an architect?
Are architects still needed? There s got to be some things they can do that the average person can t... After all, the programs my son has been looking into for college involve five or six years of intensive study. On the other hand, to be a medical doctor you study for about eight years, and now physicians assistants - who only study for two or four - are becoming more widespread.
In short, my son and I would appreciate any advice from as many people as possible who know anything about the future of architecture as a career. Thank you.
1 AnswerOther - Careers & Employment3 years agoURGENT! Question for someone who has taken the SAT recently?
My son is taking the SAT tomorrow. I signed him up for it, and just remembered we were supposed to print out an admission ticket. The college board must have emailed it to me, but I don t know what their "sender" name would be, so am having trouble finding it amongst my thousands of emails. Please look in your records and let me know what sender name sent you your SAT admission ticket. Thank you!
1 AnswerStandards & Testing3 years agoPoll about kids looking like their parents?
For those of you who look like a parent or who have children who look like you:
I m wondering if girls tend to more often take after their mothers and boys tend to more often take after their fathers, or if it comes out relatively even - with just as many kids resembling the parent of the opposite sex.
I m guessing it s the latter since I m guessing inheritance of most features is random, but I don t know. It would be interesting to find out one way or another.
The more people who answer, the more accurate this poll will be. Please don t guess. Only answer if you KNOW people who look like their parents.
Oh, as long as we re on the topic, it would also be interesting to know roughly what percentage of children resemble neither parent. So, you re all welcome to answer based on your personal experience/knowledge.
Thanks.

1 AnswerCell Phones & Plans3 years agoWinter tires: Would it work to use 2 studded and 2 non-studded?
Need to buy winter tires now.
First thought was that I needed studs for the ice I always encounter - especially covering the hilly dirt roads near my house. Then heard that studs slip on water, and don t want to hydroplane if my car is on asphalt roads where the snow has just melted, or if it s raining.
It occurred to me that a mix of studded and non-studded might take care of everything, but I ve never heard of anyone doing this. If I did, would I put like kinds on the diagonals? Pros and cons you can think of for the idea?
If you don t like the idea, which should I get - studded or not? I m mostly on the highway, but can t get there if I can t drive the half-mile over the icy dirt roads first...
5 AnswersSafety3 years agoWhat is something to eat or do that will keep me awake on a longish car drive?
I can't have coffee or an energy drink because then I'm up almost all night. I need something that will keep me energized for a 1.5-hour drive I regularly take at night. Something that lasts 3 or 4 hours would be okay...but caffeine seems to stay in my system for about 10 hours.
I've tried juice, having the window open, singing, listening to an interesting talk show, eating (works while I'm eating but 5 minutes later I get tired again). Even slapping myself only works for about 5 seconds! I still begin to drift off. I know this is dangerous for me and for other drivers on the road. Please help if you can.
3 AnswersOther - General Health Care4 years agoActive and/or outdoor jobs?
Trying to think of jobs that are active but don't involve heavy lifting. Being a postal delivery person appeals to me. Can you think of any other active jobs? (Would prefer an outdoor or mixture of outdoor/indoor job, but will consider others.) Oh - I can use my brain, too. Good with people. Willing to learn. (If you saw my other post about second shift jobs, this is an alternative question, if I would get a first-shift job.) Thanks.
3 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment4 years agoWhat are some second-shift jobs that pay decently?
I enjoy being active outdoors, so would be much happier with a second-shift job (3pm to 11pm or so). Most jobs I can think of like that pay minimum wage and/or are retail, both which I won't take. I can think of a few but would like more ideas, please.
3 AnswersOther - Careers & Employment4 years agoQuestion for HOME HEATING EXPERT?
Our heating fuel ran out some time in the middle of last night. Our house has a medium level of insulation. Currently it's 6 degrees outside and 45 degrees inside (Fahrenheit)...supposed to get up to low 20s outside with lots of sun and wind. We won't get new fuel until at least Monday. How cold will it likely get in here?
