  • Why won't PSP connect to WEP anymore?

We have had a PSP for about 2 years. All of a sudden, earlier this year, it stopped connecting to the wifi. Finally sat down and have tried different things. Reset the router and tried a WPA connection. PSP connection works (but we don't want WPA in the house, we want WEP). Change it to WEP and all other devices work with the settings, but not the PSP. It actually finds the IP address now (it wasn't before), but when it tries to test the connection: "A connection error has occurred. (FFFFFFFF)

Why doesn't it have a problem with the WPA connection but does have one with the WEP? Yes, I've deleted and started a new connection, checked the WEP key...

  • Which mental illnesses would include this?

I know somebody who has some serious mental issues. I'm trying to figure out what mental illness it could be since he's probably not properly diagnosed.

Basically, he's a pathological liar who also suffers on and off from depression. Now, I don't just mean lying. He makes up entire scenarios, degrees, accents, everything. One could call it multiple personalities, except he's deliberately making them all up. He likes for people to think well of him, so just makes up whatever seems to be suitable in the situation--even claiming to be from another country and using a different accent for a job interview. At the same time, he doesn't think "normally" and there are times when his social understanding or just his thinking are totally bizarre.

Any suggestions of mental illness descriptions to explore?

  • Can I make use of more than one WEP key?

Our D-Link router setup allows us to have 4 WEP keys. I thought that meant that we could use all 4 at once (different devices could use different WEP keys). Is that the case? If so, how do you make more than one work? If you can't use more than one at a time, what's the point of having 4?

  • Is it the TV or the PS3 that's the problem?

Our original PS3 died about a week ago and we replaced it with a new PS3 (120GB). Ever since getting it, we've been having a problem with the TV (LG 50" plasma) suddenly showing a static screen sometimes when starting a game or at times when quitting a game. If we turn the TV off then back on, it's fine; or, if we cycle through the different TV formats (DVD, HDMI1, HDMI2, etc.), it works. It doesn't do it in the middle of a game.

I've tried looking online but haven't found any help. Is there some setting we need to put the TV on, or some setting we need for the PS3? It's darn annoying.

  • Why won't my laptop play audio cd's anymore?

A couple of weeks ago, I popped a music cd into my laptop and instead of running, the screen ended up with coloured vertical bars. I thought it was just a fluke, tried again, nope, still got the vertical bars (although not necessarily the same colour).

A cd with files on it is just fine. But other music cd's won't work. Why is this happening and what can I do so that my laptop will play music cd's again?

  • Is there a way for me to get my songs back? (iTunes)?

I recently got an iPod touch. Never had one before, never had to deal with iTunes before.

I made my first purchases over the past couple of days. 2 songs that I like. They were listed on my iPod and on my computer in the iTunes library.

I decided I wanted to add some music from my own CDs just tonight and picked a particular song from a CD. When I opened iTunes, I did think it strange that some of my stuff wasn't showing up (only an album I uploaded yesterday was showing), but being new to iTunes, I figured I just didn't understand how it all worked. I added the song I wanted and went to check on my iPod. The songs I had purchased are gone. From iTunes and from the iPod, even though they were on my iPod earlier today.

Is there some way for me to get my songs back without having to purchase them again? And is there something I'm supposed to do to backup or something so this won't happen again? (Btw, I'm on Windows XP.)

  • Why can't my computers see the images?

I have a laptop and a desktop. Both are running versions of Internet Explorer 7 (one is the latest; the other is missing the most recent update). They both have Java. Neither one shows some Garbage Bin images on this one page set up with favourite songs. I asked how to remove items and was told to click on the garbage bins, which apparently can be seen on other computers, but not mine. One lady from the website checked my account and she can see it; she's running the same version of IE7 as my laptop. If I copy and paste, the garbage bins are there. When I visit the site, they're not.

What's going on? Why would the garbage bins show up on other computers but not mine?

  • How can we get this other laptop to connect to the internet?

We have use of a friend's laptop for a while, but we are unable to get it to connect to our wireless connection. It recognizes the signal and everything, but can't renew the IP address, it says. There is also no DNS server listed when I go into Network Connection Details.

We do use a router with security settings and the password entered is fine. We still can not get this other laptop to have connectivity. Is there something I needed to do with the router to get it to work? This laptop does have connectivity at my friend's house, just not at ours. I have no idea how we managed to have our own laptop have connectivity, so I can't repeat that process.

  • How to fix Windows Fax Console?

My Fax Console was working just fine until last Friday. I tried it again today, and it's still the same problem: starts up but then says "Refreshing" on the bottom status bar. Doesn't do anything else. I looked online for solutions and the best thing to do seemed to be to remove the component, reboot the computer, then reinstall the component.

I tried that--twice. When I try to open Fax Console, it takes forever. Then I can't do anything because it says that no fax printer has been installed. When I try to install a fax printer, I can't get it to recognize any drivers on our HP driver disk. Then it finally is okay that a printer is installed, but says all are inaccessible.

I need to get this fax to work. But how?

  • Getting error and Explorer shutdown--From slave to master drive?

We purchased a new hard drive, using it as our master drive, and have connected our old one as a slave drive. We've reinstalled Windows XP Pro and are now moving certain things over from the slave drive to the master drive. However, we're running into issues.

One issue is that if you are working with a window/folder from the slave drive and then want to move something to a new window on the master drive, it gives an error about Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer) having to close. It wasn't doing this when we first started copying, but now it won't stop.

A second issue actually happened first: my dh copied his old My Documents, pasted it to the new drive, and he can now no longer access the old: Access Denied, is the error message. Right after that, his Recycle Bin became corrupted.

I've suggested that we just redo the Windows Installation, which is a bit of a pain since we've started all the updates and installing software. My dh thinks it could be a problem with the...

  • Redoing Windows setup vs. repair?

We are having problems with our Windows XP. About a month or so ago, it would load the startup screen, but then would never get to the login screen; just a black screen. I asked for help then and was told to run the boot disc. Did that, although it didn't work the way it was supposed to, but I eventually got the login screen.

Since that time, it fairly regularly fails to boot to the login screen. Usually, if you turn the computer off then back on, it'll work. Today, it refused. I have put the boot disc in and have run Recovery Console, but all that seems to happen is it asks me which installation I want to log onto (there's only 1), and then nothing. So, I restart the computer and go through the whole thing again. Sometimes it does the whole repair thing, but then it just gets to the end and stops. Rebooting doesn't get me anywhere.

If I were to run Setup, would it affect what we have on our hard drive? Email and personal files and all that? Or...? Help!

  • How to correctly play recorder notes?

My children are learning to play recorder and one issue that has come up has been how to play the notes. I was taught to only use your tongue on staccato notes; the resources we have say to have your tongue go "t, t" or "do, do" as you play--even all the normal notes.

Is there an actual proper way? Those who play professionally, which method are they most likely to use? Any links for more information?

  • Do you ever wonder how humanity managed to make it this far?

I mean, with all the thousands of years of homeschooling or at-home tutoring, all those people were horribly sheltered and didn't know anything about real life! They didn't know how to interact with other people. (Kind of makes you wonder how they got married and had kids...) They didn't have friends. They were never in contact with other adults, other people... When they grew up, they must have been terribly shocked to see what the world was like! How did they handle it?!

They certainly couldn't have been properly educated either. I mean, look at Benjamin Franklin--spoke something like 5 languages, knew all about navigation, geometry, science and more. You call that educated? His parents should have insisted he stay in school. Or Thomas Edison--instead of being in school like he should have been, he spent his time reading history and science and experimenting!

So, how DID humanity manage before mass institutionalized schooling?

  • What am I doing wrong with this physics question?

    Here's the question:

The observation deck of a tower is 190 m above the street. Determine the time required for a penny to drop from the deck to the street below. (Answer given: 6.22 s.)

I used (excuse the lack of deltas and vector symbols): d=v{i}t + 2a(t)^2. Rewriting the equation, I had

t= sqrt(d/2a) which gave me 3.11 s, half of their answer. Where did I go wrong? (Or do they have it wrong?)

  • How do I fix my computer problem?

I was typing something for my blog when the computer suddenly rebooted itself but never gave me the "Windows is Starting Up" screen--just a blank screen.

I restarted the computer and have so far tried to use different options (use last known settings, chose system restore through safe mode) and nothing has worked. I can get into safe mode, but we haven't changed anything in the past few days, so I wouldn't even know where to begin to change things.

    Please help!

  • Homeschooling parents, do your kids know about drugs?

I'm on a roll with questions lately. ;)

It comes up frequently in naysayers' responses about how homeschooled kids get too "sheltered" and don't learn about drugs and all that stuff so they don't know what to do with it when they're adults.

From my experience, homeschooled kids have appropriate knowledge of drugs, but not growing up in an environment where the drugs are labelled "cool" or hinted at as being desirable in any way, or even just available, would mean they are less likely to get involved in drugs--or feel like outcasts because they're not. I'm not saying that it's bound to happen like this 100% of the time, as we all know it depends entirely on the parents. However, that has been my experience.

Has this been your experience as well? Do your homeschooled kids and other homeschooled kids you know have knowledge of drugs and alcohol?

  • Homeschooled teens "missing out" on teen life?

This idea of homeschooled teens missing out on a "normal life" or "normal teen things" has popped up in a few answers.

But what is this supposed "normal" teen life? And why should it be the way teens live? The whole idea of "teenager" is relatively new. And certainly around the world there are plenty of cultures that don't even classify their teens as teenagers--they are children or adults within their society and that's it. If you look at it from an historical perspective, the "normal" teen life today is quite ABNORMAL. And much of the socialization doesn't reflect in any way what they will have to live as adults (although, one might argue that a growing number of adults aren't really "grown up", still trying to live how they lived in high school and college).

Are homeschooled teens really missing out on any "teen experiences" that are necessary, or even important, to their lives? And please don't respond if your idea of homeschooling is that the kids stay home all day.

  • For those who are homeschooling, would you still homeschool if all of the other homeschoolers you met were...?

    weird? Anti-social? Uneducated?

I know, probably a strange question, but I have strange thoughts pop into my head at strange times. :)

I have met homeschoolers whose behaviours and education one might deem "questionable". And I don't mean those who would be different regardless of where they were schooled, but those whose parents had a fairly laissez-faire approach to raising their kids. If those were the only homeschoolers I knew, I'd still homeschool. We'd probably be a little more hard-pressed for daytime social activities ;), but I'd still homeschool. Why? Because the situation has been completely analyzed by me and I'm quite convinced that it's not homeschooling that did it, but how those parents are raising their kids. Which brings in a sub-question:

Do you learn from other homeschoolers' "mistakes"? Do you see something that you think gives homeschoolers a bad rap and make sure that your kids DON'T turn out like that?
