  • I'm looking for the title and/or author of a book that was published in the 1980s or early 1990s?

I wish I had more details to help. My sister and I read this book while we were in our junior year of high school. We graduated in 1993 which is why I think it was published in the 1980s or early 1990s. The cover of the book was red and black and it had an oval antique mirror with an image of a boy within the mirror. This would have been in the horror and/or fantasy genre. I know that the word mirror was within the title but I can't remember the entire title.

I remember that the characters within the mirror only look normal when they pass in front of the mirror.

  • Need someone to help walk me through a math problem?

My daughter is taking an algebra I class and asked me to help her with a problem. It has been years since I have done this type of math. Can someone please walk me through with steps so I can explain it to her?

3 glasses of juice and 5 breakfast specials cost 7.60 while 1 glass of juice and 2 breakfast specials cost 2.90.

    A) Write a system of two equations to model this problem. Let j stand for the price of the juice and b stand for the price of the breakfast special.

    B) Use substitution to solve the system of equations.

    C) What would be the bill for one glass of juice and one breakfast special.

On first thought it looks like A would be what I typed below but I'm not sure if I am correct.

    3J + 5B = 7.60

    J + 2B = 2.90

But I'm not sure how to explain how to do the rest.

  • A trivia question about the history of street drugs.?

I am writing an essay about the different countercultures in the United States. Each counterculture has had its vices but I'm not sure what kind. I know that during prohibition the vice of choice was alcohol and I know that the vice of choice during the hippie movement was LSD and marijuana but what about in between?

What I would like to know is what did the greasers of the 1950s and the beatniks of the late 1950s and early 1960s do.

  • Are multiple transvaginal ultrasounds safe? Professional advice please.?

My daughter had five of these ultrasounds done. On the third a heartbeat was present and she was told to return in two weeks for a fourth to get a due date. During the fourth the doctor said there was no heartbeat but she had no signs of miscarriage so they brought her back in a week later and they did the fifth which confirmed no heartbeat. She still did not have symptoms of a miscarriage so refused a DnC. A week later she developed cramping and light spotting then miscarried. A neighbor told her that when she was pregnant her doctor refused to do more than 1 transvaginal ultrasound during the first trimester because they were not 100% safe so now my daughter is convinced her doctor caused her miscarriage. Is there any research regarding risks of multiple scans of this type during the first trimester and miscarriage?

  • My almost 16 yr old is pregnant?

I need helpful responses so please no resonses about her age. She missed her period in June (it usually is in the 2nd or 3rd week of the month) but never told me. She took a test on the 3rd and another on the 4th and both were positive. She should be at least 8 weeks pregnant but her ultrasound and hgc levels say she's only 5 weeks and would have conceived barely 3 weeks ago. Her hgc level was 580 or 590 but her ob said that this is low....that it should be at least 600. They did another blood draw yesterday and said she may need to have another if that one did not show a sufficiently raised level. When they did her first ultrasound all that could be seen was a sac. When does the fetal pole appear? Is this something that we should worry about because she has convinced herself that it means she is going to miscarry. While I don't approve of her getting pregnant so young I hate to see her so depressed. They did a quantitive hgc....is this a normal level because the sites show 19-7300 levels as being normal.

She admitted that she could have conceived any time between 3 and 5 weeks ago as well so it is possible she is only 5 weeks.

  • pregnancy question about hgc and progesterone levels?

Ok my daughter had two positive pregnancy tests. She thought her last period was in May because she doesn't remember having one in June but the doc is saying that according to her first blood work and ultrasound she barely conceived 3 weeks ago and is only 5 weeks pregnant. That in itself confused me because what is up with the two week difference? Ok, we got her results today and was told her hgc was at 580 or 590 and her progesterone level was 9.8. She is concerned that this is a sign of early miscarriage because the levels are low but according to pregnancy sites I visited this the hgc level falls within normal range and I cant find anything firm about progesterone levels. We get the results tomorrow for her second blood test but I'm worried because she will be crushed if she looses this baby. Can anyone help me with this.....any advice?

  • what other countries teach Darwin's theory of evolution?

I have searched this online but so far everything I find is directly related to the US. I did read on one site that Europe is divided between creationism and evolution but that really doesn't answer my question either. I need to know what other countries provide education in their schools about this theory.

  • I need someone who can explain in simple terms these concepts.?

I am taking an online history of science course. I thought it was more historical than science but I was wrong. Our professor's idea of explaining when asked to elaborate is to tell us to read the material. Can someone please explain in very simple terms what these mean? I read all of the material but I still do not understand.

  • I have a question about citing lines used from a poem.?

My professor gave us an assignment....take the first line of any poem in our text book (The Best American Poetry 2008) and use it as a starting point for our own poem. We were given the option to submit one of our poems for a contest through one of the journals that publish undergrad's poetry. I don't want to plagiarize which is what I would be doing if I leave that line in. I don't want to remove it because then the poem wouldn't be as effective. Does anyone know how to cite within a poem...end or epitaph?

  • I need help understanding a couple of poems.?

Yes, this is for an assignment but I cannot complete the reader response assignment if I do not understand what the poems are about. The poems are:

    Wanting Sumptuous Heavens

    By Robert Bly

No one grumbles among the oyster clans,

And lobsters play their bone guitars all summer.

Only we, with our opposable thumbs, want

Heaven to be, and God to come, again.

There is no end to our grumbling; we want

    Comfortable earth and sumptuous Heaven.

But the heron standing on one leg in the bog

Drinks his dark rum all day, and is content

    From the New Yorker

    Entering

    By Laura Cronk

    Moonscape of snow at night.

    To die, to crash,

Could be a crush of snow.

    All softness.

    I imagine, driving alone,

Being enveloped by snow, crashed into, quickly.

The mice must have these visions.

Talking quietly when they can’t sleep

About tunneling in endless grain until, full of it,

Completely enveloped by it, peacefully, it takes them.

    From Lyric

    Men

    By Lydia Davis

There are also men in the world. Sometimes we forget, and think there are only women---endless hills and plains of unresisting women. We make little jokes and comfort each other and our lives pass quickly. But every now and then, it is true, a man rises unexpectedly in our midst like a pine tree, and looks savagely at us, and sends us hobbling away in great floods to hide in the caves and gullies until he is gone.

  • I need advice about adding stones to jewelry?

Is there a way of knotting a stone into a hemp necklace rather than using regular beads. I have a few small polished stones that I received and want to use but I'm not sure if I will need to drill a hole in them or if there is a way of securing the stone by using a series of knots.

  • Question about MLA format for paper?

I do not have access to a copy of the MLA handbook and need a question answered regarding a specific MLA rule. In the body of an essay when referring to a title of a book, poem, etc should the title be underlined or italicized. I checked out OWL, Purdue's writing lab and that reference site is vague because it says:

Use either italics or underlining throughout your essay for the titles of longer works and, only when absolutely necessary, providing emphasis.
