  • What are my chances of grad school?

Long story short: it is the spring semester of my junior year and I realized I want to go to grad school instead of medical school but I have some bad grades on my transcript. One for organic chemistry II and one for the graduate level physiology course I took last semester. I am currently in the second semester of the graduate level physiology course (it is a year-long sequence) and it is not going well. Besides these bad grades, most of my other classes are A's making my overall GPA a little over a 3.8. I'm in the Honors College, I'm involved in extracurricular activities and leadership stuff. Are my chances of getting into grad school good? I just need a C in these physiology classes to graduate (since I obviously can't switch my major since it's too late) and then I will be taking easy classes my senior year.

This year I was also diagnosed with clinical depression and am taking medication for that... I don't know if I should mention that in interviews since there is a huge stigma against mental illness in the US, but obviously that has affected my academics and last semester I had what my psychiatrist called a "major depressive episode".

    Thoughtful and complete answers please!

  • Birthright through Taglit Israel: "Health & Healing" or "Israel Campus Trip"?

I am Jewish (obviously haha) and I want to go to Israel this winter break. I already started filling out the application. Most people at my university go on the Israel Campus Trip, but I'm also pre-med. Part of me wants the "typical" birthright experience, but I also wonder what I'd be missing out on if I didn't go on the pre-med trip.

If you have DETAILED information about these two trips and their differences and which one you think I should go on, you'll get the best answer! ;) I've emailed Taglit Israel about this too but I'd like another opinion.

  • Can I get into medical school with a bad grade in organic chemistry II?

I think I got a C or a D in my organic chemistry 2 class and I'm freaking out! I want to go to a really good medical school and I'm afraid that's not a possibility now. I only got into my two safeties for college, and I don’t want that to happen again.

I'm at a good state school and I got a 4.0 my freshman year. This year I barely scraped a B in organic chemistry I and so many people dropped between last semester and this one that the curve this semester was practically non-existant. I got A's in all of my other classes this year (except an A- in a 1 credit physics lab last semester and maybe a B in physics lecture this semester). I'm a biomedical sciences major and a Spanish minor, I'm going to be an RA next year, I was a TA last semester, and I have a leadership position in one of the clubs I'm in. I'm also an active member in the other three. I did research for a semester last year and have lots of hours volunteering and shadowing hours. Even with a C, my GPA is still above a 3.8.

I was really overwhelmed this year. I took over 20 credits both semesters and at the end of this semester I was going through some personal issues which definitely impacted by grades. I don't want one crummy semester to screw everything up.

I plan on taking the class over the summer at a good 4-year college in my hometown, but the C or D or whatever will stay on my transcript. I haven’t taken the MCAT yet but I’m shooting for at least a 35.

  • If I get certified as an EMT in one county, can I work in a different county?

I'm taking an EMT class one county over from where I live (since I'm away at college). When I go home in the summer to a different county, will my EMT certification be valid? Both counties are in New York State.

  • Best summer jobs during medical school?

I am currently in college and I care about my grades too much to work during the year, but during the summer I need a reliable full time job where I can make enough cash to cover the expenses during the year and (if I need extra cash) maybe work a couple nights/weekends here and there during the school year to cover rent or whatever. What are some good jobs for this in medical school? I plan on living in the city I go to med school in during the summer

I figure if I need training or something, I can do that now and build up some experience so by the time I get out to wherever I go I can get a job a bit easier.

The only answer I've gotten from people is bartending (and taking a class for that), but I want to know what other options are out there.

    THANKS! :)

  • Best language for a doctor to learn?

I'm in college (in the states) and have room for a language minor. I plan on becoming a surgeon and would like the language I learn to have some practical application for my future career. I don't care how hard the language is, I really want to be bilingual.

I took French in high school and hated it, so French is out. But everything else is fair game. ;)

  • Medical Journals and Magazines to Keep Up to Date?

Which medical journals or magazines would be best to read to get reliable info and keep up to date with the medical community? I'm in college but I want to start getting used to medical literature. Which publication(s) would be a good place to start? I can ask my parents for a subscription for my birthday. ;)

  • Acne cream made my skin VERY dry, what do I do?

For 2 years, I was using clindamycin and differin on my face, but my acne got more severe recently, so I went to my dermatologist for new prescriptions. I'm now taking Solodyn pills in the morning and another topical cream at night (I forgot the name, but it begins with Al...).

I've only been using these prescriptions for a few days. I think my acne is getting better, but my face has gotten DRASTICALLY dryer. I've always used a moisturizer with SPF 30 (it's by Neutrogena) in the morning and a night moisturizer (Clinique's dramatically different moisturizer). I also use a scrub (Peach and Willowbark scrub by Burt's Bees) several times a week. Recently I've been using the scrub every day and using a bit more of these moisturizer's, but my skin is still very dry. I have white flakes all over my face that are falling off. What can I do to keep my skin more moisturized and not stopping using my prescriptions?

  • Japanese and Medical School?

I am a freshman in college and I am a science major and a japanese minor and was just wondering if, in the future, there was any way to combine being a surgeon or doctor and knowing Japanese? Could I work in Japan? Could I go to medical school there?

  • What color clothing hides sweat spots best?

Is there a certain color clothing that doesn't show the sweat spots (the kind you get on the underarms, back, etc. of a shirt)? I know I'm going to sweat when I work out, but I can't help but feel self-conscious when I have giant sweat spots under my arms when I'm doing weights and have to lift something above my head.

For example, when light gray clothes get sweaty, the sweat shows as dark gray and is very visible. Is there a certain color where the sweat is only a little bit darker than the color of the original fabric?

I shave my armpits regularly and re-apply deodorant right before I exercise, but I still sweat a LOT. Not as much as a guy, but I'm up there.

    Thanks in advance!

  • I need inspiration for a photo assignment... about nightmares.?

I have an assignment for photo where the theme is nightmares. I have a few ideas, but I want to know, what kind of nightmares do you have (I mean the horrific, wake up sweating and panting nightmares), or maybe just an idea for a photo. These will be in color by the way, and I'm leaning toward dark, Tim Burton-esque pictures, and these are film photos not digital.

Oh, and just so you know, I'm in high school, so if you have any suggestions for making awesome pictures with limited resources and money, I'd appreciate it. I don't have models or sets at my disposal. ;)

  • Do Medical Schools look at SAT/ACT grades?

I'm a junior in high school, and I was wondering if medical schools look at any of your high school stuff (GPA, SAT/ACT, extra curriculars, etc). I know they look at your college GPA and extra curriculars as well as the MCAT, but what about high school? Right now I have mostly B's in my classes, but I'm taking 4 AP classes and honors Precalc and I got an 1810 on my SAT (1240 on critical reading and math) which is kinda bad. I'm going to go to a good college either way, but do medical schools care what you got on your SAT if you rocked the MCAT? Do they care that you got a 3.4 in high school when you have a 4.0 in college? How does that work?

  • What is the name of this song and artist?

I remember watching a music video a long time ago on youtube. It was a music video of a female British artist. I don't remember any of the lyrics or melody, but I do remember that the music video was her at a ballroom dancing competition, where she cheats to injure the other competitors (like putting poison in the lemonade to make some of the dancers sick, or tripping one of the dancers) so that she wins the trophy at the end.

  • PreCalculus Honors Question! PLEASE HELP ME!!!!?

Here is the problem: "The current of a river is 3 miles per hour. It takes a motorboat a total of 3 hours to travel 12 miles upstream and return 12 miles downstream. What is the speed of the boat in still water?"

I know it involves the equation D = rt, and something about changing it around... I went in to ask my teacher and she mentioned something about a chart? It wasn't really helpful and none of my friends know how to do this problem either! If you solve this, PLEASE show the steps you took to get your answer, don't just post a number.

    Thanks!

  • Japanese Speakers!!! I have a question about names...?

I need names for characters in this thing I'm writing!

I want them to be authentic Japanese names, not American names or whatever.

    Girl names:

Child of Darkness = kurayami? am I right?

    Child of the Moon

    Moon demon

    Freedom/Free

Pure Child = kiyoko? I'm not sure...

Also, if there is some evil demon in Shinto/Buddhist mythology that's a cross between an Oni and a Kappa, that would be cool...

Oni's are too stupid for the character I want and Kappa's aren't completely evil... at least, that's what I found in research.

  • Can someone help me with iTunes and/or iPod problem?

My mom bought a song from iTunes. She couldn't download it to her mp3 player. It said that it could download it to an mp3 player though. Anyway, she downloaded it to my dad's iPod and I want to put it on my iPod. When I plugged it in, my mom couldn't transfer it over. I plugged my dad's iPod into the computer and tried to move the song into my library and it wouldn't let me.

The song is Ramalama (Bang Bang) by Roisin Murphy... so if you can't help me with this, give me a website or something where I can download free music. My mom already bought it, and I don't want to buy it again. The website I used to use to get music doesn't exist anymore.
