How did the "cake vs. pie" meme start?
I've been seeing increasing cake vs. pie polls, arguments, etc. on the internet. Some people seem to take it very seriously indeed. How did this get started?
4 AnswersCooking & Recipes1 decade agoShould I quench my pan or let it cool?
I've always wondered what's best for my pans to prevent warping. I have anodized aluminum pans, and after I fry an egg I put a little bit of water in the bottom and put the pan back on the burner to cool. Is that the right thing to do? Or should I just put it in the sink and run cold water over it? Or something else?
5 AnswersCleaning & Laundry1 decade agoWhat cute name is there for someone with a mixed ethnic background in your area?
I'm originally from Hawai'i, and I'm a little bit of a lot of things: Native American, Chinese, Hawai'ian, Scandinavian, etc. In Hawai'i, people like me are called 'poi dog' or 'chop suey.' On the mainland US, we're called 'Heinz 57.' What is the colloquial term where you're from?
7 AnswersOther - Cultures & Groups1 decade agoMy cat is sick, but the vet can't figure out what's wrong. What do you think?
My cat has been sick for the past few days. I took him to the vet day before yesterday because he was vomiting (clear) and dehydrated. She rehydrated him, gave him some anti-nausea medication, and did some bloodwork. Later that evening he ate some little bits of my steak, and some of his cat treats. I never saw him drink any water, but I assume that he did. Today he still does not appear dehydrated, but he started vomiting again. His blood tests showed good kidney and liver function, and he was negative for disease. I'm worried, but his vet doesn't know what's wrong.
What do you think I should do? He won't eat anything today, including his favorite human foods (egg, fish oil).
5 AnswersCats1 decade agoI'm thinking about putting up some posters with wheat paste: Is it illegal?
I want to cover some ugly tags in my neighborhood with some real art. I did some marker drawings of birds and flowers, and now I want to wheat paste them over the old tags. Will the police be more accepting of this if I get caught? Is it even illegal? The fines in my area are $100 mandatory plus 10 hours community service for graffiti, but I'm not sure that what I'm doing is considered graffiti. (I live in Denver.)
1 AnswerOther - Visual Arts1 decade agoQuestion about Allen wrenches, English vs. Metric?
I need a small Allen wrench to change the needles in my serger. I bought a standard (English system) set, where the smallest size is 5/32. It was too big. Will the smallest metric size (in an average hardware store set) be smaller than 5/32? I don't want to waste the gas and price of the set if the smallest metric wrench will also be too big.
Also, if I can't get the right size at a hardware store, is there somewhere else to look? They don't have them at my local sewing shop, and I'm not sure what other places might carry the right size. Electronics supply store? Jewellery supply?
5 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)1 decade agoWhen playing standard solitaire, is it possible to deal a layout with no legal moves?
When playing standard solitaire, is it possible to deal a layout with no legal moves except moving the cards from the stack to the discard pile? If so, what are the chances (odds) of getting that layout? Is there more than one?
1 AnswerMathematics1 decade agoEvery time a truck passes, my monitor swims. Why?
I live in a basement apartment right on an alley. Every time a truck goes down the alley, the picture area on my (tube) monitor does a little dip and roll. What's on the screen stays clear, but the entire active area of the screen seems like it has momentarily become untethered.
At first I thought it was some kind of synesthesia, but other sounds don't cause the movement, and it happens even when I'm listening to my headphones. So now that I know it's not in my head, why does this happen? Should I be worried about either my computer or my monitor?
2 AnswersMonitors1 decade agoWhy do women ask if they are pregnant instead of taking a pregnancy test?
I have been answering questions on here for a few weeks, and I can't help but wonder why some women spend time asking if they are pregnant, when they could just go to the corner store and get a pregnancy test? Is it because you are embarrassed to buy the test, it is too expensive, you don't trust the results, or some other reason? I am genuinely curious.
