How to make a round cake, with half one color and half the other color without using fondant?

I will be using canned frosting. I could frost the whole cake white, then use spray food coloring to color one half red . I have never used spray color, so I don't know if the color would come out solid. I could dye some of the white icing red and try to use that and hope I don't blend them. I bought a tube of black frosting to do the line through the middle.

  • How long do 30 day late payments remain on credit report?

I opened a credit card in 2006, it became 30 days past due and I paid the balance in full and closed the account. All of this happened in a 9 month period. Now, in August 2013, the account is showing paid in full and closed, but the "30 day past due" is still listed at the top of my credit report with a 1 next to it. How long will this remain there? Experian website shows 7 years for past due payments and 10 for good accounts. This account is kinda both.

  • How much butter flavor extract should I add to shortening to give it a butter taste?

What is the ratio? I was thinking maybe 1 tsp to 1 cup, but I have one chance to get these cookies right without having to go back to the store. I have a recipe that calls for butter flavored Crisco, but I don't have any. I have plain Crisco and a bottle of butter extract.

  • Both toilets in home gurgle and back up easily. What could be the problem?

We moved into a rental home that is 13 years old last week. The toilets seemed to back up easily, but I didn't think anything of it. I have noticed that both of the toilets gurgle when the washing machine is draining The toilets are at opposite ends of the house. Last night, both toilets over flowed after flushing--without toilet paper. The washing machine wasn't on when they overflowed. Is there something we can do to correct the problem? I have a feeling that our landlord is going to want more proof of a plumbing problem before they send a plumber out-and i don't want to wait until it gets worse.

  • What kind of mattress for bunk bed with wire?

I was given a sturdy metal twin over twin bunkbed and need to buy mattresses. The bunk bed doesn't have slats, but wire mesh very similiar to the one in the link below. I have scoured the internet and can't find what kind of mattress to use for this type. Can I use regular innerspring mattresses without the boxsprings or should I use a foam bunk bed mattress with this type of bed? Do I need bunky boards?

  • Use for built in indoor planter box in old ranch home?

We are looking at a ranch home that has an indoor planter box that seperates the living room and dining room/kitchen. The little wall it sits on is a tad lower than counter height and has decorative posts that run to the ceiling on each end. The planter box hole is about 4 foot long, by 10 inches deep and about 8 inches wide. This is a rental home, so I can't make any major changes. I thought about using it for herbs, but it is not near any windows.

  • Definition of "clean" in Georgia home lease. Professional carpet cleaning required?

We live in Georgia. In the termination section of our lease, it says that "tenant must leave the home clean, as it was received". My leasing agency sent me my move out notice which explains that the walls need to be wiped clean, floors mopped, etc. It says that we must have the carpets professionally cleaned and provide a receipt. When I called and asked, they told me that it is a new policy and is written into all of their new leases, but for us it falls under the clause about returning it clean. I had planned on cleaning the carpets with my home cleaner, but an additional $200 professional cleaning seems ridiculous. Also, it says that we must have the home treated for fleas in order to receive our pet deposit back. We have bimonthly service for regular bugs, but flea service costs extra. Seeing that we only had the dog a month, it seems like a waste of money. This is another thing that is not in the lease, but she said it falls under the 'clean' clause as well. This is the first time we have ever rented a home and had this problem. Can they tack these things on? They claim they had the carpets cleaned before we moved in-so we should do the same before we move out.

  • How to make house smell fresh?

We moved into a house that has a musty smell. It is pretty easy to handle in the rooms with windows, but both of the kids bedrooms don't have windows. I have tried cleaning the carpets with everything imaginable-and it doesn't help that my son keeps having potty training accidents. I have tried candles, febreze, etc. I have even put the fan in front of the door to move the air around-no change. Both rooms have ceiling fans and central air.

  • Hip ideas for cheap kitchen decor?

We just moved into a rental home and I'm in need of a new kitchen theme. The walls are beige and the cabinets are oak. Everything that I have found (roosters, apples, flowers, etc) remind me of old ladies.

  • How to tell pumpkin and zuchinni seedlings apart?

  • How can I flush my water heater when the edge of the drip pan partially blocks the drain valve?

My hot water is yellow and I have read online that I need to flush the water heater. It is in the attic. The water heater is mounted into a plastic drip tray that has a PVC pipe mounted to it that runs down into the wall and outside. The lip of the drip pan blocks the drain valve to the point that I can't get a water hose connected to it. Should I try to let it flush into the drip pan or cut the edge of the drip pan to attach the hose?

  • Car shutting off when cranking in morning and when in reverse.?

My 2001 grandam has been having a low squealing noise ever since it rained really hard and I hit a few large puddles. Now, in the morning I have to crank it 5-10 times to get it to stay cranked. When I put it in reverse (it's automatic) it shuts off, so I have to try again. It seems to only do this in the morning. I'm trying to avoid taking it to a mechanic, so if you can give me a starting point, it would be much appreciated.

  • Joint birthday party and hubby graduation?

My son will be one, my niece will be 4 and my husband will graduate college all in the same week in May. My niece is going to have a private tea party for her little friends, but I am planning a joint birthday/graduation family get-together to celebrate all of this on one day. Has anyone ever seen this done? Any recommended party sites or ideas?

  • Rude to ask for gifts to college fund for 1st birthday?

I'm a thrifty person. When I see toys or clothes in good shape at thrift stores, I buy them. I don't see the point in paying full price for toys or children's clothes! My son's first birthday is coming up. I would like to ask the guests for donations to his college 529 account instead of more toys...especially expensive NEW toys or designer clothes. Do you think this is rude? This is our first child. I would really like to start a standard of "less is more" with our little side of the family. I don't plan on inviting his daycare class, most of them are younger and don't crawl yet.

  • Drywall tape showing as a bulge under spackle, how can I repair it?

We had some drywall work done. The guy only screwed up the drywall and didn't do the seams. Hubby and I tried by using tape and layer upon layer of spackle, but the wall is painted in "satin" finish paint and is by a bright window that really makes it look like a terrible job. Should I scrape off all the tape and spackle and start over? Should I do a faux finish? The tape itself didn't bubble, it just looks like a big 8 ft long speedbump goes up the wall.
