absolutely, absolute, total, complete, newb, wannabe metal welder?
I'm trying to understand more about welding. I have tried various types of "beginner/newbie/introduction/tutorial" etc. searches of google and I always seem to get information that benefits someone who already a level of understanding, e.g. "absolute beginners guide to MIG welding" or "how to weld the perfect bead joint" Yet I'm looking for that initial handholding process of "start with x type of welding that will cover x,y,z and you need v equipment as an absolute minimum, and this type of welder will suit your needs, and here's some project books/projects/drills you can use to gain experience."
2 AnswersDo It Yourself (DIY)8 years agowhat determines the brightness of an object?
If you have a light on a dimmer switch and you turn it down, the room becomes darker.
Photons are still being emitted by the light, so what causes the darkness? Is it a lack of photons, or the amplitude of the light wave, or something like that that determines the brightness and illumination of the light emitting object's surroundings?
1 AnswerPhysics9 years agoIf light travels billions of miles from distant stars to reach us ...?
Then why doesn't the heat from those stars also reach us? Is it just too small to be noticeable, or is it dissipated elsewhere?
7 AnswersAstronomy & Space9 years agoDoes gravity "travel"?
Gravity has an infinite range so according to the theory every object in the universe is imposing a gravitational pull on every other object, albeit imperceptibly small for the most part.
Imagine if something with enormous mass suddenly appeared maybe a light year away from us, out of thin err, space. The light from this object would take a year to travel to us but how quickly would the gravitational force of that object begin to have an effect on the planet?
1 AnswerPhysics9 years agoWhat would happen if all income tax were dropped in favour of sales/consumption tax?
There's a vast multitude of taxes in the UK, as I am sure there are in most countries. It seems the UK want to have their piece of every monetary transaction made by people, and corporations in the UK. Here's a list of regular taxes we pay:
Road Tax
Fuel duty
Excise Duty (on alcohol & cigarettes)
Council Tax
TV License
Income Tax
National Insurance
Sales Tax/VAT
and... inflation
Corporation tax
To me it seems that if they calculated the marginal rate of tax and created a single tax rate (e.g. a single huge, income tax), which they applied it to everyone, it would be sufficiently high that there would be blood on the streets.
But my question is this:
The government are keen to tax both our income and our expenditure, but what if they totally ditched income tax and kept the sales/consumption tax?
I think there'd always be a portion of people who are inclined to save their money, but I think for many they'd just spend the additional money they have, generating tax revenue.
I love to see some studies, but I wonder whether the increased sales would completely fill the whole left by income tax? Interested in your thoughts.
2 AnswersUnited States9 years agoDDP Yoga online alternative for a guy?
Hi,
I am impressed with DDP Yoga, but I'm wondering if there are any alternatives? Preferably a something I can get purely online , instead of waiting for delivery of DVDs (I'm about to go traveling!).
I know nothing, but it looks like a great way to train whilst travelling, and without any specific equipment.
What do you recommend?
5 AnswersAlternative Medicine9 years agoHow long can I ride with a 15kg backpack?
I fly a paraglider and ride a motorcycle. I'd like to somehow travel on my motorcycle and fly, but I'm debating how feasible it is to ride long distance with a back pack that somewhat restricts my movement, but also weighs 15kg. I've done say 40 mins riding at a time and it's no real issue, but if i were doing longer distance it may be ba news. My question is, has anyone tried doing long distance commuting with a heavy 15kg plus back pack on their motorcycle. If so, any advice?
I guess the ultimate test is to just done my pg back pack and go for a long *** ride and see how I fair.
4 AnswersMotorcycles9 years agoFreezing my *** off in a sleeping bag?
I have a sleeping bag that is described as a 3 season bag.
It has the following temp range (in celsius)
Temperature Range: (Comfort) -1°C (Upper Limit)+14°C
Extreme Capability: -12°C
Yet, I spent the night in my bedroom where it was maybe 9C ish min, and I was freezing my *** off. The sleeping bag was on an air matt, and I was pretty much just t-short / boxers, but still ... shouldn't I have felt warm? Is the rating assuming you are fully clothed whilst in the thing?
I want to feel toasty warm when I'm in it.
1 AnswerManchester9 years agoSpecial effects in films where a person is thrown... how?
Just watching Terminator Salvation, which I think is a pretty terrible film. But it got me thinking about the scenes where the terminators man handle people and throw them across rooms.
How is this done in terms of special effects? Does some huge pneumatic thing throw people? Or is it purely CGI?
2 AnswersMovies9 years agoMinimum training frequency to become private pilot...?
I believe in the UK you need 45 hours of training to obtain a private pilots license. But more realistically this is around 60 hours.
At the same time, I've heard that the more times you can fly per week, generally the better the progression.
So what is regarded as the minimum amount of time each week to train effectively?
Would 1 1 hour session per week be sufficient, or two 30 minute sessions? Or is more required?
Two 1 hour sessions per week, would be about £1800 per month in the UK, which is a hefty chunk of dough.

2 AnswersVideo & Online Games9 years agoLybian war - why Western involvement?
I understand that there was a Libian civil war, and I"m trying to understand a couple of things.
1) reason for the war in the first place. I suspect that the reasons are similar to the reasons for many of the protests in arab states in recent times.
2) the justification for Western (US/UN/FR/UK etc.) involvement? I can't see a clear reason why the West got involved?
If the reason is because of atrocities committed against the people of Libya, then why aren't the same powers also now invading Syria?
4 AnswersCurrent Events10 years agoWhy do black holes appear to have a front and sides?
If a black hole is caused by collapsing star material under immense gravity, then surely it should then create a black hole that draws matter in from all sides?
Instead the typical diagrams of black holes show the event horizon, the accretion disc and a polar jet extending out of the black hole.
It appears that matter is being drawn in primarily from in front of the black hole - e.g. the part that is black (but we may also see a polar jet extending from it, hmm). And that matter is drawn black hole kind of like water running down the drainage hole in a sink by swirling round it and creating the accretion disc.
I'm sure my ideas are way off, but I'd like to know what current scientist understanding posits about black holes.
1. Is there a front / back and sides to a black hole - if so, why?
2. Is the above is true, is a black hole flat?
3. If the black hole is so powerful that light cannot escape it, then how come polar jets are sometimes seen?
3 AnswersPhysics10 years agoWhy does the economy always have to grow?
In Britain politicians are worrying that the economy has only only grown by 0.2% and that it'll have dire consequences.
But surely the economy grows in-line with production, sales and consumption in the UK. If grow much be continual, then won't there reach a point where the small, and already heavily populated Island stops producing and consuming enough to support further growth?
4 AnswersEconomics10 years agoGoverned by consent - is it true?
We're allegedly governed and policed by consent, yet I can't see how that is in anyway true.
According to the theory of tacit consent, we consent to be ruled by living in the country.
But surely there are big flaws to this assertion. It isn't like we can easily go somewhere else that isn't governed, shy of building a large raft and floating out to see somewhere (assuming the sea isn't entirely governed).
I'm OK with government not being consensual, but why even claim that government is consensual when it isn't?
2 AnswersGovernment10 years agoDoes free will really exist?
It seems everything we do and think is conditioned by past experience and reflection on past experience. And I suspect that our reflecting on our reflecting, and our reflecting on our reflecting on our reflecting etc. are shaped by our mental tendencies, which I believe are not entirely under our control. So in each instance, it seems that in a vastly complex way, everything we do, think and feel, is pre-determined, by what we are (our biology, make up, traits, the fact we're human beings, the capacity to learn etc.), the environment we live in, and our experiences.
For instance, does a person really consciously choose their likes and dislikes? Or do they really become aware of them, and believe that they were consciously chosen?
I don't think there's ever a situation where you can't say "this was entirely a conscious choice with no influence by past programming, perceptions, emotions, believes, societal values or the fact I'm a human being living on planet Earth, etc."
8 AnswersPhilosophy10 years agohindemburg - breathing in hydrogen?
In the hindembug film (probably sent wrong), it seems they were able to walk freely in the hydrogen filled parts of the shop. For example, a tear occurred on the outer skin, but they were able to walk inside and outside of that skin and repair it.
Surely that level of hydrogen would have prevented people from walking freely without gasmasks?

3 AnswersRock and Pop10 years agomotorcycle clipped by car - repairs?
Hi,
My lovely new z1k got clipped by a car today. The car hit my left side and crumpled the exhaust, spinning the bike around and then kind'a causing a mini high-side. The impact was around the exhaust/swing arm area.
There's some very minor cosmetic damage, some minor marks to my swing arm, and the exhaust is totalled.
Also the casing that has the gear lever and front left foot peg, on the left side, is shattered, so I'll need to get a new one.
Fortunately I have the original exhausts which I can fit.
in fact: foot rest /gear lever casing (whatever it's called), OEM exhausts (which I have) and the a new set of R&G bar ends, plus a new right side R&G protector, and I think I'm back on the road.
But my query is:
Could that impact have done anything to the swingarm, rear wheel alignment etc.? If so, then i'll call in the mech. If not, then I'll repair myself.
What do you guys think?
