  • Is it ok to sell in church (again?)?

I did ask a similar question earlier, and got some good answers, but I didn't know there were so many cynics here lol.

The question is, is it ok for a pastor to record his sermons, and then sell them on CD for those who wish to purchase them? (remembering that the internet is not readily available in this part of the world, so podcasting and youtube are out)

The proceeds will go to purchase some much-needed equipment.

I want to ask in light of this article http://www.gotquestions.org/selling-in-church.html and this article http://www.gotquestions.org/church-fund-raising.ht... which sheds light on the story of Jesus turning over the tables in the temple.

Basically, it says that this situation the bible may not be quite like the situations we see today. First of all, people in the temple were required to change their money and buy animals for sacrifices Roman currency was not deemed acceptable for the offering. They needed to change it. But buying CD's and books in church is totally a free will choice.

Second, Jesus was not necessarily angry that they were selling things, but that selling things took the focus away from God. This is still a stern warning for anyone wishing to sell in church, whether you think it's ok or not.

Third, the sellers in the temple were apparently overcharging for their services, taking advantage of the poor who needed to change their money. They were greedy, hypocritical and really turning the temple into a "den of thieves." This is obviously not the situation when selling books and CD's in the church (hopefully)

So what do you think? Should i grab some cords and fashion a whip? or buy some CD's and help out my church?

  • is it ok to sell CD's in church?

I've heard some debate on the matter, what with quoting the story of Jesus overturning tables and what not.

But the pastor of our church wants to record every sermon, burn it on CD and take orders at the end of the service. Then people can pick up their orders the following sunday. I know a lot of churches are doing this, and have had quite a bit of success.

(BTW, I am living in a part of the world where podcasting, youtube and the internet in general have not quite caught on, people are still willing to pay for audio CD's of preaching)

The point is, the sales from the CD's have a very specific purpose, for purchasing video equipment for the church. So what do you think? would Jesus turn over our tables if he came to our church and saw us handing out order forms for CD's?

  • is it "marvellous" or "marvelous?"?

While my spell checker picks up "marvelous" as incorrect, most of my friends insist that it only has one l. A quick google search seems to reveal that both forms seem to be correct. Are they? What's the deal? What is the correct spelling for "marvellous?"

  • Puppy's skin is becoming spotted?

We have a 12 week old shih tzu/japanese spitz. Her fur is white with brown spots, like a shih tzu. But her skin on her nose and her paws is developing black spots which seem to be growing. This is easy to see, since her face and paws are white, so I can see the black skin underneath clearly. Her snout is almost completely black now. She's also getting grey spots on her belly.

I don't think it's black skin disease, since there has been no hair loss. Any ideas what this could be? Is this normal? She's not scratching at the skin or anything.. it doesn't seem to bother her. I have only owned one dog before this, and this didn't happen.. Thanks

  • Premiere CS4 question about capturing?

I work in broadcast and my habit when capturing B-broll is to capture very long clips, without scene detecting, so that I have fewer clips in my project to sift through. Usually my clips are about 10 min in length.

But my co-worker told me that this can be very hard on the hard drives, and that I should capture many short clips instead of a few long ones. Something about the software having to access larger size files on every edit in the timeline..

This sounds like bunk to me, and I haven't had any problems. If anything it should be easier on the system, since there are fewer files to access, right? I havent found any documentation anywhere to support either side of this debate.

Is it really better to capture many small clips instead of a few long clips so the file-sizes stay down?

    Thanks!

  • Canadian guy marrying a Filipina girl... why so difficult?

I've lived in Manila for 3 years, met my girlfriend my first year. Now we want to get married. My contract in manila finished, and I'll be starting my new job in Canada next week. We thought she could just come over on a temporary resident visa, get married, and change her status to permanent resident (we know that we would have to extend her temporary visa, but according to the CIC website, this is possible)

But the problem is, she can't get her temporary visa. We applied without mentioning that she plans to get married. She booked a return ticket and was able to prove she has employment and family ties that would ensure her return to the philippines. She was denied on the grounds that they don't believe she has enough funds to return to the Philippines. Her relatives sent her a bunch of money to try and help, so she will apply again, but im not sure if it will help.

So what should we do? We don't want get married and then be separated while we wait for a spousal sponsorship to be approved, that would take 6 months-1 year! Should we come right out and say that she is applying for a temporary visa with the intention of getting married and changing her status once she gets to canada? Or try convince the consul that she is only going as a tourist and will return to the philippines? I could go to the Philippines to be with her, but I could only afford to go for a couple months at most, we would still need to wait for her spousal sponsorship to be approved. Are we doomed to spend that year apart, married, before we can actually be together?

PS we know caregivers and other such careers have many opportunities to come to canada, unfortunately, her career is in research in television, which has no overseas work opportunities in canada. We've also looked at work permits, but we won't count on this, since it's impossible to find an employer who will directly hire an overseas applicant, because of placement costs, Labour market Opinions, processing times, etc. I've done a lot of research as to how she could come. Seems the only way she could come is through a caregiver program (which she doesn't apply for), a spousal sponsorship (which takes so long to process), or a temporary resident visa (which is very hard to get) Any ideas? Thanks!

  • Do missionaries get depressed?

I heard an interesting fact yesterday, but I haven't been able to verify it, Hope someone could tell me if it's true.

My friend told me she learned that, using a system of points to measure depression, (for example, maybe the death of a loved one will inflict 50 points, loss of a career could be like 40 points, stubbing your toe would be like one point) Most people can take about 150 points within a certain mount of time before they have a breakdown or even commit suicide.

Christian missionaries can take up to 400. Is this true? Can someone help me verify by citing sources? Thanks!

  • God's idea of marriage?

Matthew 7:3-5 says: "Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

So why do Christians feel they have the right to condemn homosexuals as sinners when all the while, the church of God claims a 50%+ divorce rate and an infidelity rate nearly worse than that of secular society?

How can you talk about God's plan for marriage? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

  • How can i get that dry spikey texture?

I really like my chunky spikey texture, but the problem is, i hate the wet look. I'm using Loreal Remix.

What can I use to get chunky spikes, but not have the wet look? (ps, the closest thing I can think of that I could compare what I'm going for is cloud from Final Fantasy Advent Children. Yes I know it's a cartoon, but that's the closest thing) Thanks!
