  • Employer violations of USERRA?

I have a soldier in my National Guard unit who is having a problem with her employer. She has furnished our yearly drill dates (including AT) to her employer, but whenever she has drill, her employer forces her to make the days up out of her normal days off. She has been threatened with termination if she does not comply. I have looked through USERRA guidelines but cannot find anything specific about this particular situation. Is this a violation of USERRA? Can anyone give me the exact guideline?

  • How to ask a past employer for a grad school letter of recommendation?

Most websites that explain how to ask for a letter of recommendation, do it with asking a professor in mind. In my situation, I only had one professor I could ask for a letter, plus my current supervisor. I need a 3rd letter, and I want to ask a previous employer that I had a very good working relationship with to write me a letter. Can you give me any guidelines?

  • What to do about Graduate school letter of recommendation?

I need 3 letters of recommendation for Graduate school. The college I graduated from, I only attended for 3 semesters. I didn't take very many classes there that were for my major. I did work closely with two professors. One is writing me a letter of recommendation. I found out a couple of weeks ago that the other one passed away last year.

I am getting my 2nd letter of recommendation from my current employer. So I am left with the 3rd one. I plan on going to school for HR Development. I can either ask the professor I had a Conflict and Communications course with for a letter of recommendation, or a previous employer that I worked with for over a year. The professor I only had for that one class, I never saw him outside of class, and it was outside my major. But Conflict and Communications is obviously a big part of HR. My employer I have not worked with in over a year, but we had a very close working relationship and I know she would write a good recommendation...I just don't know if it would be relevant to graduate school admission.

What is the best option? Is there a better option that I'm not thinking of?

  • How to go about getting a conditional license?

My husband got a few DUIs some years ago, which he got in a lot of trouble for. When he got his last one he got his license taken away, and served some time. He was told that his license was taken away for 14 years, but he could get a conditional license after 5. Well that 5 years is this coming June, and I want to know what we need to do to get the ball rolling on this. Is this something we need to see a lawyer about? Are there circumstances under which they may not give him the conditional license? How long does the process take to get the license back? Any info would be appreciated, I don't want to dive right into this without any knowledge of the process.

  • How are there still so many problems in Haiti?

In the last couple days of news coverage concerning these horrible events, there is something that I keep hearing over and over again that I have been wondering about. It seems like there are dozens of churches and volunteer organizations who are all saying "We had a group over there on a [mission trip/humanitarian aide trip] and we are trying to get in contact with them". It seems like these sorts of trips to help out the people of Haiti are common and widespread. Not only that, but there were organizations devoted to helping Haitians even before this disaster. If Haiti has been THE charity and humanitarian cause of the last decade, how is it, as the media claims, the most poverty-stricken 3rd world country?

Just so you know, I don't have a personal opinion about this...I'm asking because it puzzles me and I wanted some input from others.

  • Graduate school recommendation letters?

I graduated in May 2008 with a BA in Sociology. After taking some time off and thinking about what the future holds, I've decided to get my Master's in Human Resources Development. Obviously I didn't take one single HR course in college. Also, the college I graduated from was the fourth college I attended, so I'm a little limited on people I can ask who might actually have a clue who I am.

Back when I thought I would get a Master's in Counseling, I was going to ask two of my Sociology professors, and one English lit professor because I didn't take many Sociology courses at this school and I did really well in her class. However, not only has it been a while since I was in these courses, but the field of study I'm going into has nothing to do with what I got my undergrad in. How do I ask these professors for recommendation letters if they may not even remember me? Is it appropriate to ask them for recommendations if the courses I took with them have nothing to do with my intended area of study? Also, do I give them guidelines about what they would need to write, or just ask them to write me a general recommendation?

  • Is there a connection?

I have read a lot of questions here where people talk about how death is much more likely to be shied away from and hidden now than it was decades ago. For instance, people used to have wakes and viewings in their homes, but now they do it all in funeral homes. Prior to the Victorian era it was common to take photographs of deceased loved ones, with or without their live family members. It seems like people are more scared of death now than they were in the past and just refuse to think about it.

Likewise, it seems like as a society, we are becoming more secular. More people question faith and religion now than they did in decades past. It seems like back then, afterlife and salvation was taken for granted more than it is now. We are a society that is not only constantly questioning, but we also have more of an ability to put our questions and thoughts into circulation, so others can see.

Do you think there is a connection? I think there could be a lot of contributing factors, there may or may not be a direct correlation between the two. I have been wondering about our society and the change in our attitudes about death for some time though, and haven't been able to really narrow it down to just one thing.

  • Why do atheists celebrate Christmas?

I guess I'm just a little confused. I know a lot of atheists say that Christmas isn't the birth day of Christ, it's already completely commercialized, it's based on pagan symbolism, etc. In my opinion though, those are just excuses, as it is widely accepted that Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Christ.

So if you are not celebrating the birth of Christ...why would you celebrate Christmas? Do you really need another day of the year to give and receive gifts? I mean you hear all the time about atheists trying to force public institutions to get rid of nativity scenes and "Merry Christmas" signs, and yet they decorate their own homes with trees and lights. It's the same thing, these are all traditions that celebrate Christmas. I just don't get why the line can be blurred with Christian holidays, but is so finite the whole rest of the year.

  • Deciding between a Master's in Human Resources Management or Development?

I have tried to look at the differences between the two programs, and while I understand the fundamentals, I don't really know which one is more attractive to future employers. My goal is to work as a government employee in the HR field. Most of the job openings I see are for HR supervisor or something similar. Which Master's degree would be best for this?

  • What are good GRE scores?

I just took the General GRE, and am awaiting my scores. I got preliminary scores for the Quantitative and Verbal, but don't have the Analytical Writing scores yet. I looked back at my application for a Master's program, and it does not say what scores they consider good enough for admission. It just says you must attach your GRE scores when you apply. So I have no idea if my scores are good enough or not.

I am applying for a Master's in the School of Education. What are good GRE scores for this type of study?

  • Questions about WOCS at Ft. Rucker?

Can anybody tell me what to expect during WOCS at Ft. Rucker? I don't know anybody who has been there and I have a Warrant Officer recruiter who is trying to talk me into putting in an application. What sorts of training is there, and what sort of physical demands at PT are there?

  • How much equity should we have after building a house?

My husband and I are currently building a house, and plan to be done in about 6 weeks. As the bills and costs mount up, I am getting nervous that the house may not be worth what we put into it. We are not going to have a mortgage, we paid in full out of pocket for everything. We are hoping the house will be worth 30% more than what we paid for it when we are done. Is this a reasonable amount of equity to expect to have in a house we just built?

  • How do I get the most money out of old wedding rings?

I have been divorced for 3 years, and still have the wedding bands from my previous marriage. I am getting married again in a month, and I'd like to get rid of my old bands once and for all. I have looked at companies that give you cash for gold and diamonds, but I'm afraid they're all a scam. And I have no clue how to find out what these things are worth, at least not without paying some jewelry store a crazy amount to get them appraised. Anyone else have any experience with this?
